in lefroy who contracted rabies from a kitten the story has served to highlight the increased incidence of rabies in ontario rabies originates in the arctic and was in troduced into our part canada by migrating foxes in recent years this migration has resulted in an increased incidence of the disease in our province outbreaks of rabies occur more frequently in ontario than in any other province or us state this year the ontario ministry of natural resources established a 26 million program to perfect a safe effective rabies vaccine capable of being distributed to animals in the wild funded by lottery revenue this program involves ministry experts as well as scientists from universities and industry it is planned to distribute vaccine through drugged bait vaccine is injected into the bait or present in a capsule form and is left in the wild both the bait and the vaccine is then consumed by passing animals in february a test of the program was carried out in remote bush areas of huron county about 20000 hamburger baits containing small quan- titi ties of a marking agent were dropped by aircraft the marking agent leaves goldenyellow lines on the teeth of animals which have consumed the bait this fall a second trialrun of the drugged bait program was carried out in the wingham owen sound area once again an aircraft was used to drop the bait into the heavily wooded area local hunters and trappers are assisting the program by turning over captured foxes and skunks to the rabies unit of the ministrys wildlife research station at maple the results of the trials have shown that 74 per cent of the foxes and 56 per cent of the skunks brought in has taken the bait rabies is a dangerous and debilitating disease that can strike in both rural and urban areas wherever animals can wander rabies has a chance of breaking out if successful the ontario ministry of natural resources drugged bait program will result in a significant reduction of the incidence of rabies in our province a new vaccine is still in the laboratory stages but should be ready to be tested in bait some time in 1981 top potato growers goodwood prizewinning entries at the royal agricultural winter
