candidates ward five carol bent wilf morley marie adams cathy joice the tribune thursday oct 23 1 m ward 4 back in politics stouffville when former whitchurch stouffville councillor cathy joice lost in her bid for the mayors chair four years ago the loss was almost more than she could take i remember driving downtown the next day she says crying my eyes out looking at the people and thinking do you know what youve done mrs joice has matured considerably in her political outlook since then she no longer considers her defeat to incumbent gordon ratcliff a personal slap in the face in fact she thinks shes gained from it i know now i wasnt ready for the job of mayor then she says im not even ready now but she is ready to resume her old role of councillor and shes anxious that everyone knows it she was ap proached to run and after considerable soul- searching agreed with her petitioners that the time was ripe now she cant wait to get started theres a great need for experience and a great need for positive action says this bright and vivacious mother of three i feel theres really a need for a person such as myself during my four years on council i proved to the people i was con- at f we will be pleased to efve you in iuxbridgehwy47s open wed thur fri until 9 pm cerned about the entire municipality and con cern needs to go with the job and the declares with a finality that leaves no room for doubt i want the job she said that when she and her husband first came to stouffville it was because it was just the kind of place they were looking for now 13 years later she assesses the town and ber possible role this way its nice to live in a small community but i believe you have to look to the future for example im going to be pressured for development im not necessarily in favor but if it comes it should be well planned if development is done properly then it can assimilate without changing character mrs joice em phasized the importance of thinking postively throughout the interview she said that being negative about development will ac complish nothing i feel a negative approach has been taken recently you can study things to death there has to be positive attitude by people making decisions dont try to shove it under the door the ward 6 candidate says shes anxious to help make newcomers to the area feel at home theres still a bam too between the urt and rural area but can be broken down one of the ways t would help bring t about is through regu newsletter a device i used with some effi beforel it makes people f more apart if they wi to know whats going without going to counc they can use t newsletter to questi things too she says besides hei fo years on council mi joice has served on t town planning board chairman the publ works committe community centre boar library board ai recreation committe and has been a member both the provincial ai federal progressiv conservative ridir associations the publisher of oi industrial magazine ar associate publisher of second she says the job flexible enough that she be able to get away whe she has to on counc matters also with daughter kim 18 karen 15 an laanne 10 growing uj time at home is les physically demanding and the children sh says say mom can cop with it of even more im portance so does mom jim sanders controlled growth stouffville its really nice whfti someone comes up to you and says boy i like living here thats councillor jim sanders ward 6 talking and the sentiments he relates from a recent encounter with a con stituent are the kind he would like to see preserved thats one of the reasons why hes running for a second term it gives him a chance to continue with his culture and recreation master plan implementation of the latter when it comes he feels will help to provide just the kind of atmosphere and amenities to maintain that i like living here attitude it is his hope that the plan would cover the needs of everyone and he would like as much public participation both orally and in writing to help bring that about i want a lively and interesting place to live says sanders that takes money and the people know that so we have to make use of government grants when looking for any programs or facilities implementation of the master plan recommends how to spend money over the next five years while determining a recreation and cultural plan for the next century he said sanders would like to see other forms of development in the town too but i hear all the time were controlled by our sewage he says the town could handle any development but it would cost 10 million to hook up with the york- durham sewage plan if the demand here was to be like markham we could do it but we arent after explosive growth he looks for more light industry to assist in development sanders also has some other definite areas of concern among these energy he initiated a committee which is now taking inventory of buildings and depart ments to see how much energy is used when completed in a month then we can see where we can make savings at no cost to the town transportation we have to improve public transportation between stouffville and toronto he says he would like to see some sort of hookup with the markham bus or the subway hes also requesting through council that canadian transportation com- mission hold a hearing into lowering rates in the via rail commuter service main st traffic he would like to see a bypass around the town to handle traffic especially the weekend rush sanders would also like to see curbside pick ups of paper for recycling and a public meeting to explain re assessment he says he made a motion at a committee meeting of council to set a salary for next years council as recommended by the administrator but it was voted down he said he could see a five per cent increase he had high praise for the town staff ter ming them very capable very helpful and very approachable hes happy with his first term but thinks he can be more effective next year a father of two young girls shauna and leanna sanders and his wife lovanna have lived in stouffville for the past 14 years in a house built by his grandfather in 1900 a librarianteacher in scarboro sanders is looking forward to the completion of another project one that would establish a campus of seneca college in stouffville proposals for the latter he said are ex pected to go before
