jack anderson bids for mayor in pickenn pickering now there are four four candidates contesting the position of mayor in the town of pickering latest and likeliest entrant in the race is the mayor himself jack anderson first acclaimed to council back in 1971 an nounced bis candidacy at a press conference friday he joins three other hopefuls councillors ken matheson don kitchen and doug dickerson all striving for the towns top post despite the fact pickerings industrial and commercial growth has outstripped every municipality in the region of durham mayor anderson doesnt hide the fact he hasnt been happy with all the bickering and backstabbing thats gone on in council during the past two years he feels more could be accomplished if members showed a greater desire to work as a cohesive unit i nope we can put together a different type of political team he said noting that his three opponents are all current councillors describing himself as a young 50 mayor anderson laughed off reports concerning his health however obviously anticipating questions along this line he produced a doctors certificate confirming his condition as aokay rather than dwell on issues mayor anderson prefers to list jhis accomplishments since assuming the position back in 1976 influx of new residents 12000 in the past nine years and the development of new neighborhoods has created a municipality second to none in the area he says he points to modern recreation facilities new libraries and a new fire hall as signs of visible progress even the proposed new recreation complex in south gerald fisher reelection i pickering gerald fisher regional councillor for pickerings ward 3 has an nounced his candidacy for re election a businessman at green wood for the past 22 years he was first elected in 1976 his involvement at both the regional and municipal level has in cluded finance committee region executive and planning committees town the pickering museum board and a representative on the metro toronto and region conservation authority gerry fisher has shown a keen interest in the area apart from politics hes been a member of the claremont community organization since 1967 and spent 15 years in the greenwood recreation association including eleven years as president in addition hes sponsored many minor league ball teams in green wood glengrove brougham and claremont form lions club pickering will be totally paid for by the time its completed the mayor said in spite of the many people oriented projects and programs theres been no municipal tax increase in pickering during the last five years involvement in an election is a new experience for jack anderson however hes not surprised so many are gunning for the top spot pickering has always had a volatile political history he said while the position takes considerable time anderson has retained his job with cp rail the political arena can be a very temporary thing he stated id have been a fool to have given up my other work with all its benefits as to why he waited longer than his opponents to make bis candidacy official mayor anderson said a candidate can peak too soon he said hed be endorsing no one and wanted no part of any political slate i had enough of that nonsense the last time and i wasnt even run ning he said hes planning a doortodoor campaign with wife muriel serving as manager with election interest extremely high hes predicting a turnout in excess of 40 per cent im convinced that the town of pickering has a bright and prosperous future and im firmly of the opinion that the guidance ive provided during my years in office as mayor will ensure the continuance of the growth weve experienced in the last decade he concluded mayor jack anderson is seeking reelection in the town of pickering a member of council since 1971 he was appointed mayor in mid1976 and has held the position ever since opposition this time around is coming from councillors ken matheson doug dickerson and don kitchen election date is monday nov 10 jim thomas goodwood a lions club may be established at goodwood a meeting for this purpose will be held on tues oct 21 at 8 pm in the orange to council in 1977 my concern for the future of the municipality and the quality of life here has promp ted me to run again she told the tribune planning and en vironmental problems are top priority she says its essential that residents are considered and kept informed on all stages of future development norah her husband and family live at greenwood claremont linda carder public school trustee for pickerings ward 3 is seeking reelection for another twoyear term sne sees as challenges in the future the need for a new school site in pickerings town centre additional special education classes reasonable class sizes and an improved text book policy in schools during the past two years linda carder has served on the following boards and committees property transportation general salary external relations early school leaving chairman and affirmative action chair man in addition to these and other activities she attended several graduation exercises parents nights music nights parent advisory and family life meetings mrs carder considers her trustee work as fulltime she sits in on classroom studies to obtain a firsthand look at pupilteacher relationships the local board member will attend an allcandidates night oct 28 at 730 pm in the durham board office 555 rossland road oshawa first craft fair very successful war pilots reunited greenwood a time period of more than sixty years cannot erase the memories cherished by milton pegg of greenwood and philip town- send of knaresborough yorkshire england the two world war i pilots members of the royal flying corps were reunited last weekend adding to the en joyment of the occasion was the fact miltons observer dr vernon hoskins now of newmarket was able to be present sunday for mr pegg the initial training base was leaside later he was transferred to a training site in texas the crafts used were jn4 curtis bi planes prior to seeing action in the war zones of france a final instructional period was spent at stamford england it was there that milton and philip milton pegg left op greenwood and philip townsend of knaresborough yorkshire england recall the days of world war i when they were pilots in no 12 squadron of the royal flying corps stationed in france the two were reunited last weekend along with dr vernon hoskins of newmarket an observer in mr peggs re8 bi plane jim thomas met they were then posted to the same unit no 12 squadron artillery and infantry co operation it was called a division of the royal flying corps that in 1918 became the royal air force any close calls they were asked too numerous to men tion said philip he was shot down the very last day of the war by enemy machine gun fire the re8s they handled were not a fast plane but quite manoeuverable milton said they operated singly searching out german gun placements because of low altitude flying they were easy targets at the conclusion of the conflict milton was released from the squadron in march philip stayed on until july mr townsend later enlisted in world war ii being only nineteen when the first war ended philip and wife maisie wanted to come to canada to attend the wartime pilots reunion at winnipeg last month out of the more than 4000 in attendance only thir teen were veterans of world war i the event not only marked the 40th anniversary of the battle of britain but the 60th anniversary of the raf previously they were here in 1944 and in 1976 they hope to come back again in 1985 milton and philip spent several enjoyable hours talking over old times and leafing through photograph albums the memories they shared are as vivid today as yesterday claremont twenty- seven individuals and groups participated in a successful craft fair oct 8 sponsored by the ucw of claremont united church proceeds from the event totalled 83978 rhoda almack president of the ucw expressed satisfaction with the result saying both the quality and quantity of exhibits were ex cellent it was the ladies first
