celebrated its 75th anniversary they were presented with life memberships left to right are velma arnold bessie forgie and hilda middleton of stouffville and mabel williamson of markham jim thomas 1 four receive life memberships stouffville wednesday june 4 marked an important milestone in the life of the stouffville womens institute their 75th anniversary the event was also important to four local ladies velma arnold bessie forgie hilda middleton and mabel williamson- they were presented with life memberships in the organization an honor bestowed on very few their enthusiasm and dedication was praised by wi president mary davidson close to one hundred attended the celebration held in the stouffville legion hall outside editors mail quick branches represented included bethesda- buttonville claremont altona scarborough junction wexford victoria square thorn- hill highland creek and lakeview the anniversary cake was cut by two long standing members delia badgerow 94 of stouff ville kr 2 and lucy sanderson 84 of main street west stouffville the president in reviewing the institutes history since its in ception may 30 1905 touched on the organizations many accomplishments down through the years mrs george brodie was the first branch president and mrs lc wideman the secretarytreasurer strange as it may seem the concerns of those early days were much the same as those of today these included curfews for teenagers depletion of natural resources and drug trafficking v at one particular meeting the business part of the session lasted so long the lights automatically went out at 10 pm and the guest speaker never did get a chance to say his piece the institutes war effort was most remarkable contributing both money and supplies for shipments overseas district president helen armstrong of wexford extended congratulations greet ings were also brought by the district secretary millie hull of highland creek mrs davidson in troduced various people seated in the audience i who had made their contribution to the in stitutes success in cluding mrs sanderson the immediate past president and past secretaries mary bar- tholomew winnie hut chinson and mabel williamson mrs san derson also served as secretarytreasurer she recalled the story v of how mrs arthurstorry then frances morris would travel to various meetings by horse and buggy on one occasion her two passengers mrs brodie and mrs wideman became a trifle upset with her driving and elected to walk home mrs storry now 90 resides in parkview as a fitting con clusion to the meetings mrs davidson was presented with a gift by institute vicepresident alice taun mrs taun in her remarks cited the wi leader as an out standing lady in our community music for the oc casion was provided by jean hammond and mary grant with marj duxbury at the piano s stouffville branch president mary presented with a gift by branch vice- davidson right described as an out- president alice taun at the
