sports stouffville more than sixty volleyball players past and present came home on saturday to play in the battle of the decades tournament in aid of the wayne feasby fund it was an all day affair which had no less than six teams playing for the title coach jim retail was delighted with the response of his expupils some of whom had travelled a fair distance for the event one of jims earliest pupils at sdss herb otto class of 67 travelled from ottawa to play with his old team mates jim hill paul grose ian montgomery laurie bucbland ron castle dave ferguson and wayne crowder this was the team that won the georgian bay championship for three consecutive years in 64 65 and 66 as well as being all ontario champs in 65 the tournament had more than its fair share of greats bruce rodin allan and larry bacon and many others turned up to give the loujnament their touch of expertise which made it such al great day for volleyball fans wayne feasby coached his old team class of 74 to an inspired final against the 1971 team that included larry and allan bacon the final score was 157 and 1512 playing in waynes team were don smith werner ulbl wayne flynn phil kionton don reesor bruce rodin and gary fockler it was a long hard day for the players who started the tournament at 945 am and eventually wound it up somewhere around 900 pm the teams played a total of six games apiece throughout the day which gave the audience virtually non stop volleyball final platings of the teams were as follows first team 3 circa 68- 71 10 points second place was tied between team 4 circa 7274 and team 6 this years h i team with 6 points third place was another ttie between team 2 circa 76- 77 and team 5 circa 75- 77 with 5 points last- place was filled by team 1 circa 6467 with 2 points it was left to jim rehill to sum up the days events and underline the spirit in which the tournament was when he said there are tfes schools who could have received such a response just about everyone came such is the ongoing spirit of sdss with still more money to come in the event was considered to be reasonable from the point of view of gate receipts which- totalled approximately 850 prior to the evening finishing it was suggested that as the event was so successful for both players and audience why not make it an annual event nothing was decided but no doubt jim rehill will be giving it impressive 71 win this brings 3 there seasons record to six wins and three losses t brad may tallied four of the bears goals and darron baston worked hard to tally two goals and two assists thebears got off to a shaky start but were kept from falling behind by some pretty smart goaltenckng on the part of scott evans it was brad tileys pass to may that put the bears ahead 10 late in the first period with no reply from bowmanville the visitors tied the score one minute into the second period however less than another minute passed before darron baston stole the puck and sdss stouffville the york county girls basketball all star games will be held at stouffviile district high school on friday november 23 the teams will consist of two players from each school in york scored his first goal of the game midway through the period brad may scored twogoals shorthanded the first from brad tiley and darron baston and the second from f bruce hachey and 5- darron baston the period ended with a comfortable 41 lead to the bears ti at the 309 mark of the final period- kevin blacktop scored his first goal of the seasonoh darron bastons rebound it was a- copy book pass s from danny larmer that gave brad may his fourth and final goal of the game v despite their five goal lead the bears still wanted more and with only 12 seconds left in the game darron baston upped the tally to 71 on a play it is hoped asked to get in touch with to have a coaches clinic al piette stating their some time early in the experience to date and new year elected to the committee were al piette as president and gary hess vice- president neil lafleur will undertake the duties of secretary treasurer the committee will undertake the financial budgeting and equipment purchases for the allstars it is proposed to administer the same number of teams as last yearjlnthe girls division there will be teams in the novice bantam midget and intermediate classes for the boys it is intended to have squirt peewee bantam and if possible midget teams lose 5 stouffville despite their 54 loss to cannington last friday thepeewee bs still look capable of getting their act together unfprtunatelytime does not stand still and this is their fifth loss in a row considering that they can and have played some good hockey this season it is to be hoped that they can break out of their slump within their next game or two despite
