pickering hospital born at bethesda the son of isaac pike he attended school there when his father was the teacher enrollment was sometimes as high as sixty students in all eight grades later he graduated from markham high school and went on to join the teaching staff at riverdale collegiate where he conducted classes in english and vocational guidance his career was interrupted by world war i he joined the canadian army and was elevated to the rank of lieutenant during the height of that conflict he was captured by the germans while attempting to rescue a wounded senior office he spent several months as a prisonerofwar although toronto was his home he never forgot his native bethesda and enjoyed returning to the community at every opportunity he was keenly interested in the history of the hamlet and spent considerable time tracing family roots and property records more recently he lived with a daughter dorothy gillespie in ajax another daughter helen mrs david praskey resides at peterborough and a son donald lives in toronto there are nine grandchildren two sisters survive mrs cora mckee of los angeles california mrs clifford burkholder bethesda and a brother maurice pike
