felt she could use a mothers helper this summer so she filled out an application form at sorel quebec 16 year old chantal cote was doing the same thing the two were brought together four weeks ago and the arrangement has worked out well in addition to helping out with the usual household chores chantal babysits 2te year old jaime and eleven month old jodi they adore her however theres another side to the story the pretty teenagers anxious to improve her english and mrs moore can already see a dif ference she was pretty good when she arrived but now shes even better she said a boarding school student shell enter grade 12 on her return this fall and then go on to university she wants to train as an airtraffic controller before the livein program was finalized mrs moore and chantal had never met in fact chantal had never been in the area before she arrived by train unfortunately for all concerned the arrangement ends on saturday however it will not conclude the many friendships chantal has made since coming here she plans to correspond with several young people in the community shes come to know and maybe just maybe the continuity will be lucky enough to have her come back teacher retires aii stouffville can recall my very first years teaching piano i travelled from home to home in a ford car even in the winter i remember how the brakes kept freezing up but i enjoyed the work retired since june 1 bertha stouffer mill street stouffville fondly remembers the early days of her career a profession that has spanned 45 years bertha is a town native born on a farm just north of the former village her father abraham stouffer was a fourth generation of stouffers to settle here there was always lots of work to do with the chores divided equally among herself and her sue brothers and sisters music has always been her first love by her seventh birthday she was taking her first private lesson her teacher then was mrs levi forsyth however music wasnt limited to her alone she confirmed the entire family enjoyed it and this encouraged the progression of her studies since there were no courses available at either the elementary or secondary school levels all her training came through private in struction she later at tended the conservatory in toronto by 1932 bertha was teaching both piano and organ when she moved to mill street she con tinued her classes and also played for- the congregation at the missionary church her pupils were often as young as six she also has had some adults all kinds is the way she describes her students some who took lessons seriously and some who didnt but to me they were all very special she said the majority of students came from the stouffville area some went on to try exams set by the conservatory and a few gave up after only one class but ail received equal attention and advice bertha still retains the same piano most of her pupils used it will never be retired this christmas it will be used to accompany sing-a- longs when her brothers and sisters come to call four of whom are still living archie reg and lambert of stouffville and lueua mrs james tompkins of can- ningfftn while taking things a little easier now she intends to continue her active association with the horticultural society and the silver- jubilee club and this sep tember shes planning to join a ladies quilting group at her church despite these extra- curricular associations bertha stouffer will be missed by former pupils and by parents of pupils several generations say thanks springvale baptist church gortnkystooffruierd attthcooc kennedy
