stagnating i vs 1 if the natives are restless and for good reason stouffville is stagnating aside from a small 15unit subdivision on the former brierbush hospital site nothings happening here and business is suffering so are certain services that further buildup might provide the stranglehold employed by planners is a little less obvious in rural whitchurch where at least two fairly sizeable residential developments will soon be going before the ontario municipal board but on smaller acreages three and four lots the same tight- fisted policy seems to apply to a point where the municipality is going to find itself bypassed entirely in favor of a ruling from a superior body the business community here par ticularly in stouffville has been handed the dulverton story so many times for so long its fed up to the teeth and no wonder the land supposedly to produce some 550 homes has been lying idle for close to ten years with no suggestion that a single sod will be turned in the next ten the town it seems has tossed all its eggs into one basket for on it hinges a new elevated water reservoir and an extension to the sewage plant without it we simply stay as we are stagnate while this newspaper has in the past voiced little sympathy with subdividers some have robbed us blind it would appear that the six million dollars demanded by the municipality from the dulverton firm is economically impractical and all things point to the situation getting worse so where does this leave stouffville out in left field thats where waiting for dulverton to hit the ball it could be a long drawnout game the time has come for the town to get off its rear end and find out exactly whats going on there are too many things dependent on this one development to simply sit backand do nothing if dulverton can give no assurance of action sometime soon they should be bypassed even if it means the town must provide certain services on its own certainly a second eastwest road is imperative business people here have been patient but their patience is wearing thin planning prejudice a representative of the jehovahs witness congregation kingdom hall in stouffville has made application for the rezoning of a piece of land on the southwest corner of cone 1 7 mccowan road and the stouffville- gormley road members hope to erect a new church there l while at one point it appeared the request would face little if any opposition a strange twist has occurred since the application approved by planning board may be rigorously opposed at the council level although each body comprises the same personnel other than requested access onto the main highway that could pose a problem we see absolutely no reason why an okay from council shouldnt be automatic we would hope that something other than good planning isnt blinding the judgment of s certain members from the outside looking in it would appear that something is lets hope not call it latcham park si ci several years ago this newspaper recommended formal recognition of stouff- villes largest playground as latcham park art latcham was alive then and would have appreciated the gesture unfortunately nothing was ever done about it although a cairn with a suitable plaque was erected near the entrance to the site while we like the mayor believe in flowers for the living we still say the town owes at least this much to the man who con tributed just about everything we currently enjoy at this location we can understand why council might still shy away from this duty if the park had earlier been dedicated to the memory of a previous benefactor it wasnt so the time is right albeit a little late to do it now lat cham memorial park its what it is because of him appearance improved v at long last the 700000 duffin creek re- channelization project is underway in stouffville as usual when something new and misunderstood is started it arouses criticism this program too has its critics but not from us excluding requirements for flood control we predict this work will improve tremendously the appearance of this watercourse an eyesore at various locations for years while we appreciate the fact this is not the prime purpose of the project it will prove a side benefit that cant be overlooked and the cost to us is trivial hooduah tatheeup p menu suite arthur latcham his generosity remembered through many memorials roaming around circus show is the real thing p in recent years ive become increasingly cynical about television so cynical every show is suspect particularly if its taped this unfair and prejudiced opinion is partly due to what i know and partly to what ive been told neither i must admit is based on too much fact however ive been around cameras long enough to learn a few tricks in the trade tricks that to the layman can be made to look like the real thing the movie industry isnotorious when it comes to this producers pull out all the stops to create the desired effect and it works people will sit whiteknuckled on the edge of- their seats as a giant shark swims closer and closer to some unsuspecting swimmer little do they know or want to know that the huge fish is likely a windup toy in somebodys bathtub how do you suppose they shoot a closeup scene of a monstrous gorilla clinging to the top of the empire state building or an entire city being destroyed by a disastrous earthquake i dont know but they do it and folks fall for it while its unfair to toss films and television into the same pot there is a relationship between the two a closeness that cant be ignored for example is the incredible hulk so allpowerful he can bend steel with his bare hands i doubt it have you ever seen motorcycle officers pull off stunts like one sees on chips not likely so whats for real im not sure any more not since halfheartedly agreeing to attend a taping of cftos circus show on location at channel nines studio west of mccowan road in scarborough my wife made all the arrangements calling twice to make sure theyd set aside eight tickets for pickup thursday apprehensive sure i was not for myself but for the kids i didnt want them to build up their hopes too high then be disappointed should the onscene excitement fall flat on its face however the only thing that fell flat was my pessimistic prognostications the per formance really two performances in one was an extravaganza of comedy color and byjimthomgs death defying drama the like of which none of us had ever seen for most of the four hours except for an occasional trip to the bathroom the kids sat glued to their seats yes me too in fact i was more dumbfounded by it all than the rest on a couple of occasions i couldnt look as a girl too young to die circled high above the ring on a trapeze bar propelled by a fullsize rocket ship at one point she held herself aloft only by the toe of one foot her arms outspread and her long hair flowing in the wind the audience gasped at what they were seeing my wife hid her face in her hands and the kids were bugeyed t c in another act a male tight rope walker tripped while attempting to skip from pole to pole more gasps from the crowd as he wavered back and forth before regaining his balance this portion of the show wouldnt have been quite so frightening if these aerial acrobats had been protected by some sort of net but they werent one slip and whosh straight down despite the hour 1030 pm none of us wanted to leave it was the best thing wed seen all summer now were waiting and watching every friday night hoping to see ourselves in living color we should be easy 1 to spot me with the chalkwhite face my wife a sickly green and six kids a mixture of iv something in between t yes circus isfor real if you dont believe it go see for yourself i did and it removed all doubts sugar and spice the boat people by bill smiley fmusselmdns lake- a summer paradise for cottage and trailer residents icottagerv trailer park residents and sunday boudayers find activity galore at mnsselmans lake only a few miles north of stooffvdle and a naifhoars drive from toronto boating continues to be a popular passtime with waterskiing a growing sport jlm thomas as a smalltown boy who was always pretty closely associated with the country and nature it is a constant source of bewilderment to me to observe the reactions of my two grandboys to natural phenomena they practically ignore them when they come to our place with a large backyard practically polluted by birds and squirrels their great interest in life is the lawn sprinkler at any hour of the day or night oh they might look vaguely toward a tree when i say listen to that big bird they might chase a robin or throw a rock at a squirrel but those things are basically boring to them much more fun to turn on the sprinkler preferably when grandad isnt looking give him a good cold shot in the back while hes trying to read the paper and spend the next hour alternately running through the sprinkler and running around with their wet feet on grans favorite rug take them up to the local plaza where a store has tropical fish huge old parrot gerbils rabbits white mice and youd think theyd be fascinated one cursory glance and theyre off and running smashing shopping carts into each other knocking over carefully- arranged displays and playing superman by leaping over little old ladies sitting on ben ches took them over to see their great- grandad last weekend he has a lovely place in the country about two acres with a hun dred places to hide and climb and explore know where they spent their time fighting to see who got to drive the dormant snow mobile in the backyard second choice was racing an old car with its front wheels propped up on two big blocks of wood be tween the two vehicles they must have covered most of north america took them down to the dock for a fish they had no more interest in fish or fishing than i have in refinishing furniture but they were intrigued about how long it would take to drown if i drove the car off the end of the dock out driving with them i point to cows horses sailboats and all sorts of things they should be interested in scarcely a look they want to know how fast were going why we arent going faster and why i dont turn the airconditioning to supercool so it will blow their hair around streetsmart city boys oh yes then there are the boat people somehow i was inveigled into going out fishing with a couple of young colleagues one of them has a dandy cruiser with a cabin stove the works seemed like a good idea have a beer or two catch a mess of bass do a little yarning for three weeks the weather had been hot and humid what a treat to get away out on the bay far from the heat and stench of town cool breeze great fishing good com panionship thats the way it is in the beer ads anyway we drove to the marina in a cloudburst sky cleared spirits were high so were the waves found the guaranteed bass fishing spot water calmed baited up they put me on the side of the boat where the bass werent while they hauled in halfpound monsters of the deep sky clouded another cloudburst more wind more rain no fishing visibility decreased along with the food and the beer no land in sight blown off the shoal where the fish were anchor wouldnt hold soaked to the heels circled the buoy marking the shoal eighteen times while novice steered erratically and skipper pretended he could chart a course nothing in sight except rain clung to rear seat with white knuckles and kept up spirits of crew with stories of flying formation through the clouds and the time we came back from horse island deer hunting in november through a snow storm pumps not working and tenfoot waves did quick figures in head estimating how far to swim if we hit rock lake freighter or other cruiser stupid enough to be out in such skipper finally figured course broke out emergency medical supplies blindfolded all of us opened her up and headed for what was either the north or the south shore of the bay obviously we made it i had caught one fourinch rock bass and one helluva cold but we had bass fillets for breakfast the sun shone again my old lady had to forget about collecting my insurance and i promptly called our minister and told him to put me down for 25 alnonth for the real boat people those poor sods who have escaped from viet nam and drowned and starved and thirsted while we go tearing about in our air- conditioned cars our cruisers with all the amenities and whine about inflation city boys and boat people enjoyed both of them thoroughly tf ah editors mail a disgrace dear editor i was ashamed to think of myself as a citizen of stouffville as i sat with a few family relatives and friends at the funeral for the late arthur latcham for one who did so much for this community the town stands in disgrace shied ashamed
