the tribune tdvbsdayavgvsrtcsnu seven year old andrew wolck who plays in goal for thornhill tried hard to anticipate the flight of the ball in this last penalty kick by oakville to decide the tournament champions jim holt by jim holt stouffville although stouffville failed to make the semi finals in last weekends squirt soccer tournament at least they had the satisfaction of putting on an excellent and ex ceedingly well run tournament not withstanding last minute nonshows by two or three teams the two day operation went like clock- l work both stouffville teams were eliminated early in the contest with george ross photo bowing 30 to port perry and then losing 40 to eventual champions baugh construction of oakville the hillsburg team did not put in an ap pearance against their fawns sports opponents who were given a bye the fawns team went down later in the day to a narrow 21 loss against newmarket of the two semifinals games the most exciting one was the match bet ween thornhill and port perry in which thornhill just and only just managed to squeak a 21 win over very competent opposition the second semifinal between newmarket and oakville showed the power and dominance of squirt soccer tournament oakville champs guaranteed investment certificates thornhills goalie may lack height but he certainly proved that he has style this was the goal that cost against oakville them the championship jim holt the oakville team which was apparent throughout the tournament they made no mistake in this game in which they steamrollered over the opposition to a 40 win without a doubt the final game of the day for the championship was a cliffhanger it took over two hours to decide the eventual outcome not only was the standard of play exceedingly high but the teams were very well matched fifteen minutes into the first half thornhill collected their first goal it looked as if they were heading for a one goal lead at half time when a fine breakaway by oak viue evened the score practically on the whistle into the second half it was again thornhill who scored first and it looked like oakville for the runriersup trophy when they put on a supreme effort and tied the game 22 despite an additional ten minutes each way to try and break the tie it was obvious that both teams were determined to become champions and overtime ended with yet another tie the final outcome was dependent on five penalty kicks apiece and even this did not decide the winner it was not until the seventh attempt that the game went to oakville on a 21 penalty kick not the best way to end a super week end of soccer but then all of us had to go home sometime i am con vinced the teams would rather have played on until exhaustion had set in at the presentation of awards martin johan- nessen chairman of the whitchurch stouffville soccer club thanked members of the club for giving so much of their time and effort over the week end and congratulated the visiting teams and coaches for their marks on thursday evening the iga team were hard pressed to come up with all draw against thornhill the visitors were at a disadvantage throughout the game they could only field ten men which should have made it a walk over for stouffville kickingoff into the wind stouffville seemed to have no difficulty in controlling the ball but getting it into the goal was a different story try as they may and they tried hard that elusive first goal was denied them this was due to the speed and aggression of the opposing backs th than lack of skill on stouffvilles part the first goal of the game came towards the end of the first half when the thornhill centre- forward kicked a long high ball into the top of the stouffville net jonathon hall the stouffville goalie was hard pressed on a number of occassions during the second half but acquitted himself well in denying the opposition any further goals it was a hand ball that gave stouffville their chance to even things up with the penalty taken by inside forward guy murfitt going high into the right side of the net the thornhill team managed a few more sporadic attacks as did stouffville but neither made any impression on the other and the attacks fizzled out had the home team shown a little more aggression there is no doubt they could have won unfortunately the visitors had it in abun dance as they so proved by tying the game with 10 men kevin atkinson was outstanding as stouffville inside right fine effort stouffville mary hoey a grade 5 student of summitview school and a resident of stouffville recently joined the scarborough
