peterborough cobourg trenton penetang unionville and stouffviue entered the provincial womens softball association midget tournament held at stouffviue over the week end despite exceedingly high temperatures it was in the mideighties the spectators were treated to some spec tacular bail during the three day event stouffvilles kins mens team came away with the bronze award of which they were already assured by saturday evening during the day they made a clean sweep and were undefeated when they went in to challenge cobourg the favourites sunday mid day this was a very tight game and at the top of the fourth the game was tied 11 a disputed home run by cobourg in which the batter did not touch third base gave cobourg the run after much deliberation by the chief umpire cobourgs third came on a steal in the fifth after which there were no more runs the game gave cobourg a con tentious 31 victory although they tried to go the long way round to win the championship stouffviue collapsed in the sixth inning against trenton on sunday af- ternoon when stouff villes pitcher darlene wagg was taken off for a well deserved rest having lead the game all the way the top of the sixth was a disaster for stouffviue back up pitcher jolynri ayotte tried hard but could not stop trenton picking up five runs by this time the stouffviue fielding was also showing wear and tear and one or two bad mistakes were made the game ended in a 128 win for trenton who went on to play cobcurg for the title having played three consecutive games against pefferlaw aurora and stouffviue trenton was in no shape to face a fresh team such as cobourg who had played only one game au day after five innings of play with a ten run lead the needless slaughter s was ended by invoking the mercy rule and cobourg became the 1979 regional champions highlights of the tournament for stouff viue were stouffvilles win over ossossane 50 in which au the runs came in the top of the first when jolynne ayotte hit a homer and cheryl singleton with au bases loaded hit a grand slam the bravery award if there was one to stouffviue catcher susan beelby susan stopped two balls in the face during the tour nament but refused to retire on both occasions the exhilarating and decisive win over markham 184 on saturday morning a big thank you to the following people who helped make the tour nament such a resoun- trenton silver medal and stouffviue bronze medal lose 2 games stouffville stouffvilles juniors dropped two games this past week they lost 80 to whitby and 63 to 4k of oshawa nothing went right for stouffviue in their game against whitby they managed only 3 hits over the nine innings and made several errors whitby collected 4 runs in the first and added slowly throughout the game in thursdays home game stouffviue did a lot better with randy grant scoring in the first and holding a 10 lead until the fourth when 4k scored two runs on a homer brad steel tied the score in the top of the fourth when he took first on a walk moved to second on mike lafleurs bunt and came home on dan wendorfs hit ken benson gave stouffviue the lead in the fifth coming home on a hit by dave dart they held the lead until the sixth when 4k hit another homer to once again tie the game at 33 the visitors came on strong with a homer in the seventh and two more runs in the eighth to take the game 6-3- despite lack of practice dave dart put up a fine performance and the loss was mainly attributable to lack of hitting power and un necessary errors next game for the juniors is at home on thursday 26 july
