extent where sums of money t can be automatically allocated so staff will draw one up i in discussing such projects bill laird t trustee for georgina township has been quoted as asking whats so special about a school jhats stood for 25 years are we congratulating the building or the com- imunily in answer to the members first question iwe would reply that theres- nothing very special about a school thats stood for 25 years in answer to the second wed say the board would be congratulating neither the building nor the community but rather recognizing an event within a community bill lairds questions were undoubtedly on the minds of several trustees and while the issue may seem trivial it reaches the very heart of whats really wrong with the system presently running our schools its too big too impersonal and too far removed from where the action is it would be too much to expect we sup- pose for eighteen board members representing an area from steeles avenue to lake simcoe to get goose bumps over reunions at schools built long before the present operation came into being if this is true then the same attitude should hold for- official openings of new schools in the region the project lasts from four to six weeks vl during which time pupils read books of their choice pledges arereceived with all proceeds going to the multiple sclerosis society of i canada the program is an excellent one howevery it can involve people with no close school ties and herein lies the risk they should understand that uhere is no restrictions placed on the number of books a girl or boy xnayread last year several received a rude jolt whenthey learned the amount owed was far more than had been expected for example a 2 pledge could total 20 if the student read ten books we support the program and its twofold purpose to stimulate reading among grade school pupils and raise funds for a very worthy cause all we ask is that each person agreeing to a pledge understand the rules plusplateau sounds like bragging it isnt threshing bee got out okay 4 anything but the truth -is- im not- happy for me unforeseen dangers increased about it not happy at all indeed if id had my way the occasion would have been ignored completely but my wife reflecting on what id put her through six kids a mortgage and all saw it as just reason for some kind of celebration for her butnot forme the fact im now admittedly sliding down the other side is a source of wifely relief i suppose now she goes to bed arid sleeps while i go to bed and dream any way ignoring my6rders she planned a party a gathering of kith and kin that took me by complete surprise she even had a cake i madeih the shape of a typewriter wow as i stood there completely dumfounded by it all i couldnt help but recall mount joy sideroad 16th avenue to markham high school while attempting to avoid the beast the front wheel slipped on loose gravel dr innis macdonald spent an hour picking stones out of my facev then therewas the afternoon a cow went mad in a field next to tony allens asparagus patch east of markham i would have been a goner but at chap named r harold wilkinson intervened anddistracted the attention of the enraged animal 1 k y needles have always been a nemesis dentist dr neil smith now of markdale will likely still recall the day i passed out twice following a simple injection when i finally came to his face was whiter than mine -r- and yes ive had a few hairraisers on the highway loo the scariest occurred when i soared over the top of a hill- on theway- to a house fire east of claremont atthe bottom was a tanker truck parked crossways f on the road drawing water out of a nearby stream to this day i still dont know how i slopped in time j i falling asleep at the wheel has very right word to come by the hour withoulexpressingany emotion other than benignancy but the small inanimate things that besiege our daily life drive me into a fury that knows no bounds its not the big things ive mastered ihem i can stand behind a mechanic or a plumber and nod knowledgeably with the best of them any damfobl knows that the driveshaft is connected to the main brake cylinder or the hot pipeis not connected tothe coal pipe- or whatever theyre trying to tell you its the little things the things you are too ashamed lo get an expert for but havent a clue how to do yourself that make me break tfiings lake the name of the lord in vain accuse my wife and children of- dreadful things and generally act like an idiot whos going to call up a typewriter repairman for example lo change the ribbon on his typewriter or a carpenter to come and screw a couple of tiny nuts into a doorknob that keeps falling off mywife has just been through one of my experiences with ihe litue things and after ten minutes of it she ran into another room white and trembling and locked the door she bought me a typewriter ribbon at christmas we dont usually buy presents for each other the last few years shutup you dummy or words to thai effect aaarghp anyway ihere you are its not one of my few admirable qualities i admit it but im stuck with it and the people who are stuck with me are also stuck with it i can start screwing a couple of one eighthinch screws into a doorknob and wind up with somebody locked in the bathroom for a week i can put an averagestandard stapler on the blink in 45 seconds with staples all over the room and wire irreparably bound around the thing you punch ilsall rather hard to understand i arii not particularly inept or stupid nor am i particularly clumsy i- was a
