astounding 673 known as the seven- oclock club the ladies team is captained by joyce shadlock and in cludes sandy van derleist marylin car penter barbara watts kathy daniels and jean pilkey the ladies average increase was a very creditable 487 the awards will be presented at the may annual bowling banquet snowarama stouffville the stouffville and district snowmobile club had a very suc cessful outing last week end when they collected more than 700 in pledges for the whipper watson snowarama event held at bradford in aid of the multiple sclerosis fund only two machines encountered trouble although conditions in the centre of lake simcoe were less than favourable a continual series of whiteouts made navigation ex ceedingly hazardous but good route marking ensured that everyone returned safely the next snowarama event is to be held this weekend at port perry and the club intends to enter all its members to raise further funds for this deserving charity the club will be leaving the a and p car park at 8 am on sunday morning 11 february stouffville the reputation of larry van dyke is already eu known in snowmobile circles which is quite an achievement for a young man 22 years of age larry who was the all ontario champion for 75 77 and 78 he did not race in 76 recently collected two firsts a second and a fourth in the kawartha cup races at peterborough a measure of his ability is that he rides a machine of only 250 cc whereas his wins have come in the up to 340cc class this also reflects on the ability of his mechanics who strive hard to extract that extra one or two horse power which can make the difference between winning and losing a race the week prior to the kawartha cup races he also collected two firsts and two seconds in the georgian cup series held at owen sound having spent a year apiece with mercury and the now defunct skiroule marques he is now in his third year with arctic cat according to larry the cost of operating just one machine on the racing circuit is around 10000 a year so far he has been fortunate enough to be sponsored by his father however it looks as if dad is off the hook for next year due to larrys success with the cat machines he has been offered a factory ride by the manufac turers for the 7980 season working in his fathers workshops at bethesda sales and service who specialize in the arctic cat marque larry has had a first hand insight into the development of snowmobiles over the last seven years from an antisocial noisy and unreliable piece of machinery the industry has progressed to producing the highly sophisticated and socially acceptable machines of today which are fast gaining more and more public acceptance although the new era machines are much faster than their predecessors they are by no means dangerous and have as yet not been overdeveloped to a point where they cannot be handled safely by a competent rider the demise of many manufacturers over the last few years there were over one hundred them in 1972 has be instrumental in the i dustry making such rap progress in devdopmei there are only manufacturers no producing snowmobile regarding toe rece formation of snowmobile club in ti stouffville
