in nightm fo bereaved relived otos tribune could exploit the tragedies of these families months later by reminding them of their losses at what is nor mally a joyous time of year these people have suffered enough and i feel that re running these pictures was unfair unfeeling and most of all very unkind wat possible good could you do by rerunning these photos true we cannot escape the truths that the news brings us every day of our lives and nj one affected by these horrible ac cidents will ever forget them but to have to face them again in a newspaper for all to see just three short days after christ mas probably a very difficult christmas at that is hardly an easy thing to accept i was not one of those af fected directly by your paper and im very thankful i wasnt but for those who were i must speak up and say you can hurt people so easily please next time be more thinking and feeling what is a picture to some is a nightmare to others mrs osmith stouffville editors note would that the year 1978 had been one of only good news and pretty pictures unfortunately it was not nor will it be in the year ahead considering all the sad events of the past twelve months three such pictures out of twelve on the page seemed a pretty low percentage dear sir i have lived in stouffville less than a year and during this time i have purchased your paper faithfully every week for the news about town and the columns and the classified ads i have enjoyed it until dec 28 when i pur chased the paper on this date i expected to see pictures and stories of christmas in my community the reflections of the holiday spirit and the joy that christmas brings to all much to my dismay on page 8 1 saw large copies of the pictures that made the news in 1978 in the middle of a page filled with community event photos such as the com mencement at stouffville dist secondary school and the 1978 president of markham fair were tragic pictures of ac cidents that affected three families of our community there in bold sight were the reprints of pictures depicting the tragedies that had happened in the last few months there for all their friends and family to see remember and reflect upon once more were the pictures of the scene they will never be able to erase from their memories i understand that at the time of these unfortunate ac cidents these pictures and stories were news to the readers and the losses were hardfelt by all but it is in credible to me that a community paper such as the stouffville teacher done i 1 1 dear mr thomas your excellent editorial relative to the injustice done to one of your local teachers ruth herbert has come to my attention way down in arkansas usa but good as your published sentiments are they are not enough action is the next thing on the agenda no doubt you canadians know a very great deal about our historical boston tea party who taking in justice into their own hands those courageous colonials pitched about 10000000 worth of british tea into the briny deep since protests had done no good the only thing left was action also you have probably heard of californias recent proposition 13 by which the overwhelming majority of american westerners took things into their own hands and basic wage makes sense dear mr thomas a standard salary for teachers based on ex perience etc across the province as suggested by trustee harry bowes makes sense to me in my opinion its high time this endless wage hassle between the local boards of education and the federation was brought to an end its an exercise in futility that creates only hard feelings with the teachers if the offers are too low or discontent among tax- payers if the settlements are in their opinion too high i have long thought there has to be a better way maybe mr bowes beef supper the stouffville united church congregation is holding another beef supper feb u with two sittings one at 5 pm and another at 615 pm tickets 4 and 2 are available at cards hardware and chas richards and sons recommendation is the answer with his respect to disappointment over not getting the chairmanship post harry bowes shouldnt lose any sleep over his defeat whod want the job anyway controlling so many members who represent such diversified areas would in my opinion be a terrible task in closing i wish to commend you for your regularly scheduled interviews with our trustee representative topics of discussion tend to bring answers to many problems close to home richard behler rr2 stouffville ice brought the state bureaucrats to their knees figuratively speaking to their knees and on their knees was exactly where the states overlords belonged the success of proposition 13 has spawned a groundswell of american opposition- to bureaucratic injustice throughout the american nation just wait untilthe 96th congress convenes in january and thefat will be in the fire so much for american liberty brought about by determined defiance of contemptuous politicians hooray for any and all who will stand up against the senseless goliaths whether in politics or the school room go to it canadians let us have a stouffville public school party having boston tea as an encouraging example from this vantage point in arkansas i would encourage a band group or crowd of determined parents and students to pay a visit to the prin- ci pals office as the silent american majority is now speaking up let the silent canadian majority speak up and rectify this ignorant injustice go to it canadians hooray for canada harllew smith gravette holiness library gravette arkansas usa bell service is terrible the tribune thursday january 11 u dear mr thomas you and other residents in the former village of stouffville are obviously annoyed because of recent changes in bell canada service in your area this is understandable for those people who do not wish to cau toronto however you are still much better off than those of us in the 473 and 895 exchanges living in the north portion of whitchurch stouffville where even adjoining exchanges are long distance as far as bell is concerned residents within a mile of our home to the south and east are on 888 nudity cartoon priceless dear mr thomas ive been meaning to write for some time but your issue of jan 4 prompted me to do it now pat wheelers cartoon on the subject of nudity was priceless our whole family got a big kick out of it as we do every week it and your roaming around column are two of the first things we turn to in my opinion a professional cartoonist is a tremendous asset to a newspaper particularly when the drawings are on topics of local interest ive seen many newspapers in my day both weeklies and dailies the cartoons in the tribune are the best through you to mrs wheeler my congratulations shes tremendous ruth naylor stouffer street stouffville from sackville nb mr and mrs herbert smith from sackville new brunswick are visiting with their daughter mrs edgar glenn her husband and family mill street stouffville and 640 exchanges this means we must pay long distance charges to call these neighbors while these same people can call tollfree anyone in metro toronto which in some cases is a distance of 45 miles our basic monthly rate for a single black telephone on a twoparty line in 1428 for this we cant even callballan- trae when i wrote to the ministry of transport about the manner in which the subscribers in this area are being ripped off by bell canada the only response was a visit from bells local manager the government had sent him to investigate my com plaintsthe equivalent to appointing the godfather to head a royal com mission to investigate organized crime the attitude of the bell manager was un believable he said my arguments werent valid he felt there was no reason any parent should have to telephone the school attended by his children and so it did not matter that all schools in the district are located where calls are not free he said most people seldom have to call a physician so it didnt matter that 640 is long distance and since the children see their friends at school theres no need for them to call one another believe it or not this man actually believes hes living in the twentieth century i inquired about having a bethesda number installed i was told it would cost 64 monthlyplus monthly line mileage from bethesda although the exchange comes to within one mile of our home if i wished to retain our 895 number the lady at bell estimated it would cost about 100 monthly if i did not retain the 895 number my next door neighbor would- then be longdistance i think its timefor bells monopoly to be disbanded and the telephone service be made competitive mrswtmcadam rr 3 newmarket ontario small eggs w sold in 2 doz flats just what the doctor
