16 tribune editor jim thomas wrote a column related to past commencement exer cises at stouffville high school a check of past newspaper records he said revealed no awards nights as such farther back than 1955 were academic accomplishments not recognized previously be asked rjl mercer now the viceprincipal at sjss and a staff teacher in the early 50s at stouffville high has filled in the blanks yes there were commencements way back then mr mercer says and be has the programs to prove it they make in teresting reading in 1951 the event was staged in the veterans hall there were eight teachers on staff in cluding the principal george a pearce others wererxi mercer dx bacon da davis miss i nicholson l oliver wf sherwood and mrs mary wade honor graduation diplomas were presented toshirley steckley ivy schneider willard mover marean jamieson jessie harding and vera doust the valedictorian was shirley steckley jessie harding received the whitchurch tup scholarship it was presented by resident of parkview home in stouffville marked her 9lst birthday born on montreal street stouff ville mrs mccowan lived at malvern for a time following her marriage then moved back to town she was the organist at the stouffville congregational church st james presbyterian church and at malvern her father john jerman was a deeply religious man she recalls mrs mccowan spends much of her time
