board blocks pa abuses durham region despite opposition the durham board of education has taken steps to prevent future abuse of professional activity days by teachers at a recent meeting nov 14 trustees voted in favor of guidelines that they hope will prevent a recurrence of last years incident when a group of teachers from the staff of harwood secondary school spent a part of one pa day at torontos woodbine race track while the motion setting out certain rules and regulations was introduced by trustee lucy bateson and passed it was the subject of some scathing criticisms by several board members one of these was george pearce who called it an affront on every conscientious teacher in durham you cant legislate morality he said mr pearce admitted there had been abuse of pa days but he charged we dont need rules on teachers saying they must bring notes from their parents trustee david french of pickering called the policy deplorable because of the actions of a minority this is an oppressive move on the majority previously the board bad attempted to dock the absentee teachers a days pay but the arbitration panel upheld the teachers grievance because there was no specific policy in this regard explained trustee bateson enforcement of the ruling will have to be done by the principals said education director ken munroe it may not be 100 per cent effective but hopefully side never complaining he recalled it was a team effort all around barbara noted her husband added the family couldnt have managed without the help of many friends in stouffville he credited his remarkable recovery to the expertise and patience of many doctors and nurses and my brother of course theres no way i can ever thank everyone not properly he concluded concerned citizens public
