received top honors for academic achievements at commencement exer- cices nov 17 patty murby and cathy wood both graduates of the high school were presented with town of whitchurch- stouffville proficiency awards by coun cillor becky wedley john bryson a member of the aurora legion was also on hand to award pat with a prize for proficiency in english mary starr 17 now a grade 13 student received a prize for excellence in her grade 12 language courses jim jones president of the kinsman gub of auroranewmarket made the presentation pat is currently enrolled in a three- year diploma program in public relations at humber college toronto cathys following a four year honors ba program in environmental science and geography at the university of guelph by jennie johnson glen major white vale were honored saturday at an open house in the banquet room of fernandos restaurant markham the occasion was their golden wedding anniversary jim thomas harold and muriel hornshaw couple wed fifty years by jim thomas whitevale its nice to know that in a changing com munity like whitevale some things never change an example of permanence in the hamlet is the fact mr and mrs harold hornshaw have lived there fifty years on saturday this wellknown and highlyrespected couple celebrated their golden wed ding anniversary to mark the occasion a reception in their honor was held at fernandos in the village shoppes markham many people attended some from a distance mr hornshaw was born at green river the son of fred and hester hornshaw mrs horn shaw the former muriel spears was born in toronto but moved with her parents adam and jessie spears to atha at an early age her father served as reeve of pickering township they both attended green river public school but not at the same time they also attended green river baptist church harold and muriel became more formally acquainted following a new years eve party at greys hall green river they were married in weston nov 17 1928 the couple remember their honeymoon trip like it was yesterday they travelled to orchard park new york in a brand new 28 chevrolet and on their return took up residence in the little white house across the road from their present home rent was 4 a month mr hornshaw worked with his father on a 154 acre farm where the herongate barn theatre is now located and still helps out there at weekend auctions eleven years ago last july they moved into their new bungalow that mr hornshaw helped build harold and muriel are proud of their family that in cludes two daughters catherine mrs george bruce of ottawa marilyn mrs fred carter of whitevale and one son herbert of markham they have eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren prior to their anniversary open house they were thrilled to learn that one granddaughter catherine baroud and her 15 month old son shaddy would be coming all the way from lebanon to attend the celebration mrs hornshaw has one brother harrison spears on kipling avenue toronto mr hornshaw has one brother joseph of whitevale and four sisters gertrude mrs murray milroy and irene mrs campbell anthony both of markham marion mrs alfred kayes pickering and helen mrs tom
