the strap a last the tribune thursday october u ims resort 55 york region teachers showing positive interest in school children is the best way to curtail disciplinary problems dr john denison east gwillimbury school trustee commented at this weeks york board of education meeting tuesday dr denison was speaking to a delegation objecting to the boards proposed policy on school discipline and in par ticular the boards support of corporal punishment the doctor wondered if it was not the positive attention given to the child and not the banning of the strap that would have the most beneficial effect at the meeting the board hear two delegations for in formation purposes regarding their proposed policy eugene page an elementary school principal in toronto said that since his school has benned the strap and started using what he called logical con sequences and en couragement of the child disciplinary problems have dropped tremendously mai pyper a guidance councillor explained the system by stating that corporal punishment only en courages more violence if we teach the child to solve problems by strapping then the child copies us and he solves his problems with violence strapping in no way helps the chronically misbehaving child it just makes him worse what he really needs is en couragement she went on to ex- plain that when a child misbehaves let him know what be did wrong but also encourage that child that he still is a good person if a child does something naughty remove him from the class and tell him why be is being removed but also still treat him with respect but strapping a child doesnt work it only begets more violence georgina trustee keith hargrave then commented that im at a school where there is blood in the hall where there have been stab- bings now what good does talking to a child do in a situation like that many other trustees pointed out to the delegation that they recommend corporal punishment as a last resort only however mrs pyper reiterated her opinion that strapping does no good at any time it does not change a childs behaviour in fact it usually makes it worse both parties agreed that what is needed is more training on the part of the teachers in how to handle discipline problems the boards proposed policy will be subject of further debate at their next meeting on october 23 after which the board will make its final decision it furniture bargains o- m 7 bedsofas beds 39 5 5 dj x turkey feast is nov 1 student grad receives rna diploma ruth ann white main street stouffville received her registered nurses assistant
