response to the red letter feature article which appeared in last weeks tribune i feel under the circumstances this requires a reply and would appreciate very much if what i have to say as noted below will receive equal coverage in this weeks edition of your newspaper it is very interesting and enlightening to note mayor gordon ratcliff s comments in last weeks tribune with regards to the cost borne by our town of whitchurch stouffville our tax money for ontario municipal board hearings of 1000 per day in the sitting of such hearings as a taxpayer i share his thoughts especially relating to speculative proposed plans of subdivision of scenic land and the right of concerned home owners residing in the immediate area of such proposals to object to various aspects of such plans perhaps mayor ratcliff who is retiring from office is viewing this in retrospect drawing from his wealth of experience over past years for home owners of our town urban and rural who are not aware of what goes on that brings about such ojjb hearings perhaps this reply will enlighten them and make them aware of the reasons why such hearings are necessary to act as a control that speculators with plans of subdivision will think twice before proceeding to steamroller their quest for purely a monetary gain over justified objections of affected established residents an omb hearing of two and onehalf days concluded thursday of last week at latcham hall to determine whether or not our local council has made wise and objective decisions supporting a proposed plan of subdivision on the vivian road between highway 48 and the 9th concession in the old vivian forest to ac commodate this speculator council has seen fit to amend the official plan of the town and to also pass a special bylaw for spot zoning in a most sensitive area of the oak ridges moraine why as a resident directly opposite this proposal i have nothing to gain and everything to lose in my own considerable in vestment in my home and chosen rural way of life fortunately for myself and family we have a group of extraordinarily good neighbors on the vivian road and the 9th concession who are also affected and share my view we have banded together as a con solidated and determined group to oppose this plan of subdivision in its present form this issue has been in the works and before the planning committee and council for the past five to sue years to broaden mr ratcliffs vision regar ding the cost of such an undertaking let me say we as a group have spent endless hours at meetings among ourselves at planning committee and also council meetings trying to keep abreast of the moves being made like a game of chess they speculator and council being the masters and we local home owners being the novices if one could add up all our costs taking the time off our earning of a living hiring mr don kimura a local lawyer to put a cost figure in actual dollars would i am sure be very expensive indeed only as a united group my neigh bors along with myself and family were able to oppose the efforts of this speculative planner and the support they received by our local planning committee and council the omb hearing has been completed and we await their reserved decision with interest it is hoped that this board will take into con sideration factors which we as a group did not agree with in the proposed plan and that some modifications will result giving us at least some justifiable con cessions to maintain our rural way of life to conclude i sup port mr ratcliffs view that such plans of sub division costs incurred by local residents who op pose be the responsibility of the speculator who is only in it for a buck yours truly finleyjm macdonald rr3 vivian road stouffville plan teen dance ballantrae youth
