secondary school on a 4 month student exchange her host during this period is robin donn of boyer street keith bolender carmen bohme student visitor from germany stouffville for the past three weeks carmen boh me of germany has been enrolled in a firsthand immer- sion course on the canadian wayoflife and shell continue in it for the next two months as carmen 15 is presently involved in a local student exchange- program shes staying at the home of her stouffville counterpart robin donn also 15 of boyer street here til december the program sponsored by the ontario board of education has carmen staying in town and attending sdss until december 12 at that time shell return to germany and in april robin will go over to stay with carmen for three months both girls saw the program as a wonderful opportunity to learn and experience a different culture although there were a few problems in getting it un derway jumped at chance i had a pen pal in ger many and ive been taking a german course for the past year was when this exchange program came up i jumped at the chance robin said however everyone was telling me i was too young lo apply so i went personally to the board of education and convinced them lo accept me the two girls although the same age are quite different in their personalities as robin explained im much more exuberant i love to dance while carmen doesnt shes a lot more quieter than i am a big adjustment carmen on the other hand said with a smile that robins rather funloving im not sure how to react to her sometimes both girls did readily concede that its been a big adjustment for all however they both get along well with each other and they admitted enjoying the chance to learn from each others background language is not a problem as carmen has been speaking english for five years tests are easier carmen who comes from the small village of ober boihingen approximately 30 kilometers from stuttgart commented on some of the differeences shes noticed and adjustments shes made comparing the two systems of education she said the tests are much easier here and we dont have them as often in germany we also dont write any final year end exams until the end of grade 13 and then its just one large general knowledge test combining all the courses together girls outnumber boys she also mentioned that her class in germany has 20 girls and only two boys something robin confessed she was not looking forward to although shell be at sdss for three months carmen will not receive any credit in ger- many for her work here and conversely robins school work in germany wonl be credited in stouffville one thing carmen as well as most canadians is not happy with is the state of our postal service poor mail service ive been waiting two weeks for a package from home and i have no idea if it will ever get here and its hard to explain lo my parents why they dont get my letters she felt overall though that what shes seen of stouffville and he surrounding area has been a worthwhile experience its definitely been worth it so far i have no regrets and no feelings of homesickness and robin is now anxiously awaiting her trip to germany i hope to learn the german language a little better by then but regardless im sure to have a greal time
