very own citizens band the band is very close to becoming a reality following last mondays recreation committee meeting to finalize the budget the bands spokesman dave howard approached the committee with a reconstructed budget of 2000 down from their original 3000 request is asking for 10 a month per instrument for the 18 band members who have not got their own he said this would be for only four months at which time all members would be required to purchase their own in struments he noted that his budget request was reduced mainly because he has received per mission from the stouffville high school to use their music room and music stands free of charge wht wrihunt from purchasing music which mr howard estimated to be at 100 a month for a year we need the music ob viously and to start off we should have at least half a dozen arrangements mr howard noted he added that he has 40 people listed for the band he has the room to practice and is now just waiting for music and in struments the pull down a gate on the night of march 29 vandals climbed a com pound fence on the premises of lamberts strictly corvettes on don mills road north of the gormley sideroad taking from the premises 200 in small bills a number of rifles ammunition gun cases and one 22 calibre handgun one of the corvettes sustained 300 to the rear end when it was used in an attempt to pull down a gate paint was scratched on two corvettes to the tune of 1300 and the front parking lights were damaged on another of the vehicles car keys were removed from an office area and the two cars were taken off the equipment by municipalities the town council had earlier this year sent a letter to the office of mr chretien in support of a resolution passed by the town of aurora aurora had requested relief from the federal sales tax on electrical distribution equipment mr chretiens letter recommended that the town turn to the province for aid but council replied that towns are not only specified areas of the province as suggested by the fear water problems town rejects gravel operation stouffville whitchurchstouffville council has decided to request the discon tinuation of the mining operation at the pit of pit haulage limited councillors did decide however to go ahead with a meeting with the ministry of the environment for informational purposes only but have decided to request that the ministry of natural resources not renew the license of pit haulage limited to mine gravel in their pits south of the bloomington sideroad bet ween ninth line and highway 48 a report from hydrology con sultants limited the consulting hydrology firm for pit haulage limited claims that based upon the data and our calculations it is our conclusion that the proposed gravel mining operation will have no significant or adverse affect on groundwater sources supply the report goes on to specifically mention that the proposed mining operation would have no adverse effect on the municipal wells councillor jim doble once again raised the issue of the extent of the cones of influence of various sources from which water is drawn in the area including the towns wells the cone of influence of the towns wells now ex tend well past the sabiston pit and with the possibility of effluent from the york sanitation dump being drawn in a more southerly direction by the deepening of the mined pit the danger of pollution in the towns water supply is far too potent a danger to allow the mining operation to continue ac cording to mr doble councillor june button claimed that nothing the ministry of the environment might say could change her mind concerning the unknown quantities of danger in allowing the mining in these pits to continue councillor eldred king voiced concern over the probability of the ministry of natural resources heeding the towns opposition to the license renewal federal ministers letter but are also specified areas of the country taxpayers pay almost twice as much in taxes to the federal government as to the provincial and therefore ottawa should be requested for assistance as readily as queens park in toronto mr chretiens letter seemed to give a brief glimpse of the overall government viewpoint on economic expansion in the letter it was stated that ex pansion of an electrical distribution system in any particular locality would en courage new housing and in dustry and therefore benefit only that particular locality and the subsidization of this ex- council also asked mr chretien to explain the cost of pansion would place a tax burden on all other canadians councils reply rightly pointed out that the great influx of immigration in recent years to the toronto area had in creased the pressure on municipalities in close proximity to toronto to expand costing rural communities like whitchurchstouffville valu able farmland the farmland is lost to production because of the new subdivisions and industries if immigration were curtailed the need for new housing would decrease lessening the need for the expansion of electrical distribution systems the letter states town supports catholics a trustee per municipality the york region roman catholic separate school board feels the town of whitchurch- stouffville should have its own trustee on the separate school board as it stands now we share one trustee with the town of aurora at present there are 14 trustees on the board the number from each municipality determined by the number of people on the assessment rolls with the increase in population in the region of york the board has been notified to elect 16 trustees in the next elections in the letter signed by jack mcdermott chairman of the separate school board and representative for whitchurch- stouffville he urged town council to support the boards position in requesting that each municipality be allowed to have at least one member from their own area and that the two new trustees to be elected come from those areas now sharing a trustee besides stouffville and aurora east gwillimbury and georgina also share one trustee mr mcdermotts letter went on to say that the board was forming a delegation to meet education minister tom wells hopefully before the end of april to request present legislation to be changed allowing for the board proposal town council approved the boards resolution we suspect that some budget by 75 per cent aurora the york county board of education approved a budget of 79686499 wednesday night and did it by cutting only 20000 according to aurora trustee norm weller the only cut they made is the communications officers job said mr weller the rest of the socalled cuts is just rolling out the foolishness there was lengthy discussion regarding the maintenance budget which was originally set at 45 million and was reduced to 18 million the board defeated motions which would have brought the total for maintenance down to 16 million but adopted one which raised it back to 18 million georgina trustee bill laird said that staff had already said it could live with a maintenance budget of 175 million and they should know if they say they can live with it im prepared to believe them he said on the other hand thornhill trustee doreen quirk said the principals have set their priorities i have been to some of the schools she said and i wouldnt want to live in a house that is in the condition some of our schools are in the finance committee recommended that 500000 be removed from the salary line for the period from the expiry of present contracts until the end of 1978 it was approved by the board and means simply that the contract negotiations for next year will be based on less money another 132000 was lopped off various budget functions including 46800 for
