c the tribune thursday february 23 1978 diamond wedding mr and mrs edwin byer celebrated their diamond wedding an niversary last week at the wideman mennonite church markham edwin byer cant ever recall carrying ruth meyers books when the two attended classes together at old dicksons hill school eighty years ago hes not even too sure if she was really his best girl at that time if not she was a short time later even as they rode in the horse and cutter across the peachs sideroad for a few hours of skating fun on a pond south of the henry miller farm those were the days simple pleasures still vividly recalled by two of the areas best known and most highly respected couples on saturday edwin and ruth byer celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary a milestone in their lives that family members refused to ignore the open house event was held in their second home the wideman mennonite church hundreds at tended many from a distance mr and mrs byer are justly proud of their pionecr heritage ruth byer is the daughter of william henry and annie hoover myer edwin is the son of jl and emma haacke byer her motlier died when she was just a baby she was raised by her grand parents the date of their marriage was feb 20 1918 lewis burholder conducted the ceremony that was only half the battle all the hotels were booked solid and they had to make their way to a relatives home on ossington avenue the street cars only ran about once every hour recalled edwin it sure was cold for a time they lived at her grandparents farm across from the new fairgrounds then moved to binbrooke near stoney creek after two summers there they returned home living on the east side of hwy 48 until the road was widened and that house was torn down they now reside in the same area a short distance east mr and mrs byer are active members in the wideman church where he fired the furnace taught a boys sunday school class served on the trustee board and the building committee mrs byer still attends the com munity sewing circle that meets twice a month edwin byer is best known for skill in the processing of honey a trade thats still carried on by a son erie and youngest brother an organ recital at the stouffville united church on tues feb 28 at 730 pm in order to raise money for the church building fund i am trying to make it as enjoyable and at tractive as i can said ms the man was in to toromark a number of times then moved out to edmonton a short while ago after looking in edmonton for a suite the man then called toromark and wanted one of theirs shipped out to saskatoon where he would be residing mr fleischer who has been in markham for 27 years commented he had made sales in oshawa and bradford but he felt such a sale across the country was extremely rare
