pembrokes resolution that were the finest police in the world editorials running motors offensive we have noticed that a lot of people around town are very irresponsible about leaving their cars and trucks running while they shop on main st tliis not only makes vehicle thefts 30 years ago this week excerpts from the february 19 1948 issue of the tribune water shortage residents heard the voice of warning over the loud speaker last friday requesting all users of town water to conserve the supply the reservoir has been drained to a dangerous level and the auxiliary pump played up just at the moment when it was badly needed to pump additional water to the system however just when the situation was alarming the pump was put into motion and from then on it could be seen that water was going in faster than out of the reservoirs it is customery to check the reservoirs every couple of weeks and all through january and the first week in february they remained full despite the fact there was no january thaw however when they were checked the past few days the water was down two thirds from that moment things were put in motion for starting the electric rotary pump that boosts water from the springcreek and throws it into the reservoir however the pump had not been used for a year and minor work delayed it being turned on just after this mechancial process and the reservoirs practically empty the pump failed because a packing blew out which caused a bit of a i delay happily it was fixed and now the water situationisreturning tonormal jimarkham roads- -s- a newenlarged budget forroad building and maintenance is planned by markham township council as revealed in the road bylaw passed last week for an expenditure of 60000 in 1948 the total is 15000 more than last year it is pointed out by reeve griffin that the extra amount is required to provide for new machinery which he said would later pay big dividends to the municipality the council discussed at length the purchase of a truck adapted for drawing gravel in summer and plowing snow in winter but no decisions was reached on the type or make until several will be seen in operation the council also envisions the purchase of a power mower which it is claimed is badly needed and is another machine that will cut labour costs ridiculously easy but is also a major source of air and noise pollution along the street the most obnoxious offenders are go bus drivers and gravel truck drivers whose vehicles are noisier and stinkier than your average family car recently an acquaintance told us they timed a bus sitting in front of the travel agency and the bus was left sitting for close to an hour and a half all the time filling the street with foul fumes and totally unnecessary noise it is a well known fact that a majority of all air pollution is caused by cars and trucks and to add to it for no reason at all is totally indefensible it is also hard to understand this attitude given the ever escalating price of gasoline and the ever diminishing supply the people who routinely leave their vehicles running are usually the types who never walk anywhere so they perhaps dont realize how unpleasant this stench is to pedestrians some communities have laws against leaving unattended vehicles running both because they can be easily stolen and because they are a recognized health hazard the next time you stop for coffee please shut your motor off and give the rest of us a chance to breathe some relatively clean air in peace outdoor rink a great idea while common sense or indeed any semblance ofratioiiality often seems to be lacking on the national scene we are happy to report that there is no shortage of it locally this was proven again last weekend when the markham fair board turned their open air race track into a giant skating rink the track already had a six inch coating of ice on it since snowmobile races had been booked there earlier so it seemed logic al not to waste all that ice we applaud this kind of thinking and admire the style in which the fairboard carried it out they offered the public not only some of the best skating anywhere but while they were at it also arranged for music bonfires and free sleigh and cutter rides to top it off when they saw the great turnout the board officials promised to keep the skating going as long as possible weather permitting with a damp cloth to clean it place it in a shallow pan or on a piece of foil and bake for 45 minutes to an hour depending on the size of the squash it is done when a knife canbe easily inserted into the top of the squash or when it gives when you squeeze it cut open on a plate scoop out the seeds and serve the seeds can be lightly salted with sea salt after washing and roasted in a moderate temperature in the oven for a snack food the squash can be served with butter or honey and cinnamon there is no end to the nice ways to serve baked squash this is the easiest most nutritious and best tasting way to cook squash now what to do with the remaining squash mash or puree it and freeze it in serving size bags to serve reheat in a double boiler or in the oven in a covered baking dish when i do this i always freeze the squash in bags containing cup or 1 cups just the amount needed for my two favourite squash recipes squash honey cake and pumpkin pie thaw the squash in a bowl and bring out clean the filling will puff up during baking and then settle while cooking if there is any squash left over bake it in a greased or buttered oven dish or custard cup this is great topped with real whipped cream i always whip the cream in the blender or food processer with just a small amount of honey it only takes seconds and gives the best results of course this is best when you make the crust with whole wheat pastry flour this gives it a nutty flavour which adds to the taste good music a matter of taste kids stuff design your own ski course wfcvi v a catastrophic experiment byjeffsteiner one day when i was in jail a man asked me if i wanted to have a medical experiment i was so bored that i would do anything so i did it he took me to a restaurant he told me i could eat all i wanted to and i did then he took me to an operating table they put me to sleep he gave me a pill the pill had a ten on it which meant i would be asleep for ten hours i woke up after the ten hours were up i did not feel very good because they had transplanted a cats heart into me the next morning i was lapping up my milk and eating my cat chow jeff is a grade six student at dickson hill public school the object of this game of course is to get the skier through the starting gate down the hill and over the finish line without leaving the course to make the playing board you will need a stiff piece of cardboard or the lid from a box and a felt tip pen draw a starting gate at the top and a finish at the bottom and then connect the two with a winding and dangerous course a penny will be your skier place him at the start and tilt the board to move him along the course if he slips off he has to start at the top again the trick of course is not to be too hasty as in real skiing too much speed will result in a wipeout everytime getting even with him by zsolti pinter gr3 orchard park one day i was sleeping under a shady tree i woke up suddenly and there i saw my worst enemy his name was baddy and he was fat not slim i really really hated him i went up to him and i said lets not fight dont do wrong lets do right we didnt do wrong we did whats right and till this day we havent had a fight we have always been impressed with the ingenuity of our readers in figuring out our mystery pictures so we were really shocked this week when no one guessed what the last object was since everyone was so completely baffled we have decided to give you another chance to win the 5 were sure you can guess it and will provide a clue that should prove an eye opener the answer two words is con tained in this announcement can you find it dear sir recently you printed a letter from a mrs alma oldham about the max webster dance that was held at stouffville district secondary school i wish it to be known that i in no way contest the fact that mrs oldham has a distinct and definable right to her opinion but if that said opinion makes unjustified and unfounded generalizations which could very well be detrimental or slanderous to the character of any one person or group i feel that it should be carefully examined and reassessed for instance mrs oldham stated that she was rocked by the max webster account and particularly disturbed by the total acceptance of this group by those present as the ultimate in good music what mrs oldham does not seem to realize is that although we may enjoy a particular rock band we do not necessarily feel that this is the ultimate in good music furthermore mrs oldham suggests that we begin to promote the very best in music she does not however go on to define just what she feels is the very best the rock music industry has contributed in ways that are not always publicized in the sections of the press that are read by other than teenagers for example a few years back lighthouse donated their services to the whipper billy watson telethon for crippled children george harrison of the beatles performed for bangladesh a program for hungry children record sales and their respective sub- sidiaries provide revenue and employment- and is therefore contributing to tax programs- mrs oldham refers to herself as aj christian woman and a lover of good music i believe however that just because we indulge in this socalled junglebeat noise does not mean that we are not christians or that we do not listen to good music i was always taught make a joyful noise unto the lord and i feel that each of us in our own way must decide on and define good music in our own way be beesley student sdss rr2- stouffville ci he disagrees with letter dear sir i was rocked as i read the account of mrs alma oldham on the max webster rock band and rock musicians in general i was particularly disturbed by the hearsay second hand charges put down by mrs oldham as a christian teenager and a lover of rock music it is very hard for me to un derstand how anyone could so severely condemn this type of music i wonder if this person realizes the tremendous enjoyment and entertainment rock fans experience blatant and severe remarks such as calling rock jungle beat noise are very disap pointing as well as embarrassing i personally would never think of downgrading mrs oldhams musical tastes even though they may not agree with mine disregarding any theories about the generation gap or being oldfashioned mrs oldham just simply doesnt have all the facts it is quite obvious that she bases her negative statements about rock music on secondhand sources information she has read and heard on tv interviews is just not enough to make such powerful and sweeping comments mrs oldham needs some actual firsthand experience i didnt see alma at the max webster concert i am a student at sdss and was of course there to see max webster i listen to kim mitchell and other bands for no other reason than that i think it is good music a wide range of people not just youth are rock music fans and there cant be anything wrong with plain honest enjoyment it is ludicrous to say that all lyrics are either sexually suggestive or drug oriented you cannot make these generalizations from other sources you must hear them for yourself if you honestly listen to modern rock music it can hardly sound as bad or corruptive as you make it out also it is proven that rock musicians actually have less in volvement than doctors with hard drugs representative of mrs oldhams poor outlook is the comment on her school days starting a few years ago these few years have most evidently stretched out considerably by the tone of her views and feelings yours truly
