income can duck behind a registered retirement savings plan to protect part of his income from the taxman in the process he will be putting away money for his later years and providing a savings cushion against the time he may need quick cash an rrsp will not allow you to escape tax only to postpone it but the day of reckoning does not have to take place until much later in life when theoretically you are no longer working at a regular job and enjoy a much lower tax rate there are two ways in which you can save tax dollars by investing in an rrsp you do not have to pay tax on any money you invest in a plan if for example you are in a 30 per cent tax bracket you will be entitled to a 300 tax refund for every 1000 you invest in your registered plan the investment limit in an rrsp is 20 per cent of your salary earned income in tax terms to a maximum of 5500 a year if you do not belong to a company pension plan or 3500 if you do the second way an rrsp can earn tax funds is when you borrow to buy one if the 1000 was borrowed from a bank and repaid over a year the interest you paid on the loan is a tax deduc tible expense if the in terest on the loan amounted to 100 it could mean another 30 tax savingshowever if you borrow to invest in an rrsp for your spouse the interest on the loan is not deductible the fact that the tax department treats in terest paid for an rrso loan this way offers you other chances to manage t your financial matters more wisely if for example you had 3000 and wanted to buy a car as well as invest in an rrsp you would be much further ahead using the cash to pay for the car and borrowing to buy the rrsp since the interest on a car loan is not taxvji deductible but that on an rrsp loan is rrsp plans available through chartered banks trust companies insurance companies and mutual funds come in a complicated variety of forms those grave enough to try and explore the field in any depth willo find themselves en meshed in a jungle of detail however there are important elements you should watch for the rate of interest your in vestment will earn and whether it is guaranteed or a rate which will fluctuate up and down any bonuses you will be charged either to join the plan or to take your money out of it in other words un derstand the potential earnings of the plan the degree of risk and the limits if any which will be placed on your flexibility should your needs change in the future you may want to leave one plan and invest your money in another or you may want the money for some other purpose in which case remember that you will have to pay tax on it at that time another important tax consideration the deadline for investment in an rrsp to be applied against 1977 income is march 1 1978 f mr cnrran is with campbell sharp
