the tribune thursday november 24 1w7 7 movie shot at local church dickson hill local church people members of the stouff- ville youth fellowship and dickson hill missionary church will soon become a familiar sight to church congregations throughout canada last friday night world vision of canada moved a film crew into the dickson hill church and using local church people as the congregation filmed an address by rev william campbell world vision representative for our churches churches and missionary boards the church which closed down in the spring was used for the filming for that very reason graham down producer of the movie told the tribune that they were looking for a reflect on advent the backs of many local christians heads will be prominently featured in a world vision of canada movie members of the stouffville youth festival and other christians from throughout the community were on hand for the filming at dickson hill missionary church friday night the local people played the part of the congregation the dickson hill church which closed in the spring is now used every sunday evening by the youth group ex gang leader finds god the stouffville pentecostal church was filled to its rafters last saturday night to hear former new york gang leader israel narvez speak of his experiences israel told his warm moving story to ap proximately 250 people the crowd was entirely unexpected and the organizers were required to scrounge up every last chair they could find in order to seat everyone the story mr narvez told was one of rising from the depths of a new york city street gang with its life of beatings knifings and drugs to a life of christianity israel was the leader of the powerful mau mau gang and came to be known to the outside world through another former gang member nicky cruz mr cruz finding of christ-and-his- exploits were written about in the book the cross and the switch blade mr cruz who now has a worldwide ministry mentioned israel in his book which subsequently led israel to the ministry israels story was aimed at the younger members of the crowd and he still retains the street jargon and man nerisms to help him reach the kids most of his listeners were amazed at how young israel was when he first got involved with the gangs he commented that his first experience with a gang was when he was 13 years old i had to pay off my lunch money of 15 cents to some gang member he said so i told my brother and he gave me my first switchblade i pulled the knife on the guy and he left me alone afterwards however the other members surrounded israel and he was fortunately saved by the gang leader of another group who was of the same puerto rican background as israel the leader then asked israel to join his gang and with a little hesitation he did his first rumble took place just a few days afterwards and israel recounted his experience of noninvolvement when the two groups met i could see a few guys falling and i knew this was no place for me so i ran into a building and hid out until it was all over af terwards i took off home as fast as i could all you could see was my dust israel interspersed his talk with numerous humorous anecdotes that were well received he has a disarming com fortable style that put the audience at ease and built up a quick rapport with them following his initial fight israel became more and more involved with the violence finding that hewas actuallyenjoying it he also started into the drug scene when he was 15 years old the apache gang split up so israel formed his own named after a fierce african tribe the mau mau the gang started to grow quickly so we started beating heads of oher gangs pretty soon we became one of the strongest gangs in town we had over 300 mem bers he commented the first turning point in his life came a short while later when he met with david wilkerson the well known minister who tried to help the gangs israels reaction to mr wilkerson was one of derision this guy was really weird talking about god and the bible nobody knew what he was up to but even then he had an influence over the gang myself included it was strange but we really did listen to him a few weeks later on july 4th rev wilkerson got a number of gangs together and held what must have been a very unusual service despite warnings of a major outbreak of violence the service went off without a hitch it was at this service that israel admitted that he let jesus in his heart for the first time i started crying i dont know why but i did afterwards i talked to the minister and started to get involved with the bible it was there that i left my gang life behind for the first time however israel went back to his gang following what he thought was a betrayal from one minister back with the gang he got into more trouble and violence and was sentenced to five years in the state reformatory on a manslaughter charge after being released israel said he hated everything and everybody but that changed when i went home and saw my mother and knew i was destroying her life from that point on my life changed for the better a while later he met nicki cruz and they discussed nickis work as a minister i felt good israel said and i also felt the tug of jesus for the second time in my life i knew you couldnt run from the lord listen he says i stand at the door and knock if anyone hears my voice and opens the door i will come into his hnikp rpv 39ft by rev jacob small memorial christian church some years ago king george v and queen mary while vacationing by the seaside took a walk along the ocean front when the queen sprained her ankle they were forced to seek assistance at a nearby cottage in answer to their knock a voice called out whos there king george and queen mary was the reply you dont expect me to believe that do you exclaimed the occupant see for yourself said the king opening the door the man and his wife were astounded to see the king and queen immediately the cottagers invited the royal couple in and of fered all the help and hospitality they could for years they retold the story and always con cluded by saying you know we almost refused to coincidence that mr down learned about the church howard mills director of the stouffville youth festival said his son and daughter donny and marian mills met mr down at a wedding and in talking to him they mentioned the church they mentioned to mr down that after the missionary church closed for lack of congregation the stouffville youth fellowship contracted with the missionary church to use the building for their sunday night meetings which formerly were held at the stouff ville youth centre the church just suited them to a tee commented howard mills the youth festival members were asked to come out and participate in the filming and in vitations were extended to the congregations of other local churches the rural church was about threequarters full friday evening the youth festival
