mount joy public school is the one he attended and this past summer the house he was born and raised in was moved to the museum site the house and farm were located on the east side of highway 48 near assinck brothers the house circa 1860 was built by the koch family but was owned by the burkholders from 1918 until 1961 elmer and his four brothers were born and raised in the old frame house and his parents lived their entire married lives there until their deaths his parents were norman and annie nee hoover burkholder we knew it was an old house commented mr burkholder but we never expected it to end up in a museum mr burkholder now lives at dickson hill and works at the stouffville coop he said that when his family lived there there was no central heat in the building and no indoor plumbing the family used horses for farming and his only souvenir of the house and farm are the wooden pegs used for hanging the harness on in the barn mr burkholder admits to not being emotionally attached to the house but has fond memories of growing up there it is fairly unique in its construction as the frame is constructed of heavy barn type beams the outside is done in board and batten to aid in renovating the house to its original condition mr burkholder donated some pictures of the house taken prior to 1943 when an addition was added although his father had insulation blown into the walls and ceiling an unusual step in those days mr burkholder remembers the bedrooms as being not too warm the kitchen stove was below the bedrooms and the parlour stove in the front room was maybe fired up sun days the tribune thursday october s 1977 7 appliances used reconditioned stoves washers fridges used new parts for alc makes brnq our old pin js a sample reasonable rates 16 market st f
