during the last few months uxbridge council has been displaying a consistent lack of action in matters that concern the town ship it all started with the controversial gravel issue which has plagued the area for a long time for a while it seemed that council was coming to grips with the problem following their extensive studies and proposed bylaw to give local municipalities greater control of the aggregate industry however since the time the bylaw was brought before council the members have been going at a snails pace in doing anything with it not too late to save station it seems we may have been somewhat premature in stating last week that the old cn station iniown is doomed to demolition at the end of november since then denis sainsbury of the whit- churchstouffville conservation club and ivan harris have formed the nucleus of a committee to move the station up to the conservation area in the north end of town tuesday night they received a promise of support moral not financial from town council apparently this was necessary before the metro toronto conservation authority would give permission to have the building moved onto their lands it seems there is now aplace to move the station and tentative plans to use it as a j natural history museum j j timsis now very short and community support financial and moral is desperately needed now is the time to stop griping and start acting i at last weeks meeting an amendment to ensure local control was brought up but then turned back to committee for further study one can appreciate councils concern on this important issue and realize that they want to do the right thing but enough is enough they have had ample time to fully study the problem to hear comments from both sides and to make their decision the infuriating part is that it seemed council had made up its mind before and now they are hedging on implementing their decision if council is to have at least the appearance of a confident progressive group they should make their decisions and stick to them without backtracking and putting them off for months other issues that council seems intent on dragging on forever are the goodwood go- karts and the scarborough rod and gun club both situations have troubled council for just as long as the gravel problem and it seems the end of it is not in sight council apparently wants noise control on both the karts and the club along with defining the difference between concession and race karts this is not a new matter but council once again is putting it off in the form of going to the ministry of environment for further direction they seem loathe to deal with the problem once and for all we feel council any council is there to provide leadership for their community and to make decisions controversial or otherwise that they feel represents the true feelings of the people uxbridge council by constantly turning asidedecisions and by being reluctant to clear up these matters is doing a grave disservice to themselves and the people they represent if they find they are incapable of making v decisions then perhaps they should seek other employment last weeks sweltering weather more things change if food prices continue to soar perhaps it will start a back to the farm movement and that would be a good thing for ontario and for the whole american continent for that matter this is being written from a hospital bed where i am in traction and under heavy sedation dont worry i wasnt in a car crash i just had a fiveday visit from my grandboys it seems that my daughter was moving and it was going to be awfully difficult with the boys underfoot and it was a great chance for gran and grandad to really have a good visit with their favorite people untrammeled by the interventions of parents what can you say sorry but wejike to play golf in the afternoon spend a quiet evening and get up when we feel like it in the morning during holidays of j course v cant you burble something like no problem dear wed love to have them itll be a real treat and then you hang up the phone look at your better half and mutter mournfully good gawd the kids are coming they came they saw they conquered and thats why im writing from hospital as soon as i get out of traction theyre moving me permanently to a place called autumn daze a home for chronic grandfathers to eke out their last few months exchanging senile horror stones about grandchildren oh well it may not be so bad my wife says shell come and visit me regulariy ex cept during the golf skiing fall and sewing seasons that means once in march and once in november she promised to bring me a drink on each occasion because my nerves are shot to hell too but thats a long time between mickeys it isnt that my grandsons are bad kids theyre not its just that they are three and a half and one and a half years old and their favorite sport indoors and out is tormenting the living daylights out of each other first few days werent bad the old lady has a way with them she can change a diaper on one and carry on an incredibly complicated conversation with the other without getting a hair out of place she can sit at the sewing machine with one on each knee and actually sew as they try to poke their fingers under the needle when shes cooking she plops them up on the counter beside the stove where the older one asks 84 questions all beginning with why and the little one opens the cupboard doors and bangs his eye on them and shrieks during this period my role was a fairly passive one all i had to do was get them their breakfast nothing to that i give them each a can of yoghurt and half a banana for dessert i open a can of peaches and get the ice eream out it may no be your standard unimaginativecereal breakfast but the boys go for it and seem to thrive on it and then of course when theyve finished breakfast and are in a great mood theres not much for me to do except let them play around on and over me break up eight fights over whose ball or shovel it is and serve as a trampoline when they line up at the far end of the living room run as hard as they can and hurl themselves headfirst into grandads lap almost invariably knocking heads together with subsequent recriminations howling and both of them on my knees being comforted but before you known lunch is over and its nap time no 2 goes down happily with a bottle no 1 requires six stories if i read the one abou flicka ricka and dicka one more time ill go out of what is left of my mind but it works he gets groggy just as hes drifting off no 2 hurls the bottle out of his crib leaps up rattles the bars yells for action and both are wide awake ready for more fun and games with grandad afternoons in the backyard are com paratively peaceful except for one thing for some misguided reason i have only one lawn editors mail hose did you ever see two boys with only one hose between them older is stronger he wrests hose from younger and squirts him with icecold water younger bellows runs id grandad soaking from head to foot and jumps up to be loved and petted older forgets hose and starts to climb gate grandad yells meantime younger has picked up hose and gleefully squirts grandad grandad yells again unprintably younger drops hose and runs square into square corner of picnic table great welt on forehead gran will be furious with grandad for not watching boys properly those were the good days came tuesday and gran was committed to a golf tournament dubiously are youliure you can cope who me course i can cope no sweat i can handle these two with one head tied behind my back well maybe but gawn away wid yez itll be childs play and it was six hours of it during which eight fights were broken up the boys ate all four of the chicken legs id prepared for the three of us we went shopping and i lost one a for 60 panicf i lied seconds in the maze of the supermarket the younger discovered how to unfasten the buckle of the seatbelt the older started yelling for his mommy when i smacked his ass for clobbering his little brother with a ping pong bat which for some reason unknown to man or god he had found behind the car seat my daughter walked in with a cheery hi dad and found me on the phone trying to call the police department the fire depart- ment anybody she looked at me shook her head took the phone from my shaking fingers and called an ambulance no shocking pictures reader pleased fast fearless fleabag flies kzw v rrr some dogs are more fearless than others sweetie a pooch of your readers im sure the people named in the article will appreciate the free ad vertising and will no doubt acquire new clients as a result ed note ms small complained the front page picture in the july 15 issue of the tribune a shot of country and western singer carole baker was offensive she was upset also at the front page which appeared in the july 21 issue of the tribune this photograph of a young girl with a poodle was judged by ms small to be lewd and suggestive at the time of the complaint ms small was informed that we do not see anything improper in either picture perhaps because we dont have as vivid an imagination as our reader ms small was informed that her com plaint would not be considered arid it in fact is purely coincidental that in perusing last weeks paper ms small found nothing ob jectionable to her peculiar sensibilities we suspect it is inevitable that in the usual course of covering community events we will again offend ms small in reply to her question
