qualified to do blood analysis work and is a ventilator expert he began using his skills before he even finished the course i worked for an ambulance service during the summer explained pat all policemen receive first aid training but pat finds his in depth knowledge very useful especially in the emergency treatment of accident victims the sight of blood doesnt bother him you get used to it he says but he is incensed at the in difference people often show at the site of an emergency he recalled the case of a gentleman at a golf course who suf fered a heart attack and fell face down in a puddle there were at least six people around but no one bothered rendering assistance he said bitterly they didnt even bother turning his face out of the water v pai explained that the principles of pulmonary resuscitation are easily learned many people are familiar with mouthtomouth rescue breathing one of ihe basic techniques that may be used and he would like to see lifesaving methods more widely taught he feels that part of the reason people are reluctant to get involved is the fear of a lawsuit as a result everybody pays he says pat is looking for ward to his career as a provincial constable for several reasons its something outside and the outdoors appeals to me he smiled and there is an element of diversity he also likes the opps system of alternating schooling with the job training during the one year probationary period it is customary to assign the new recruit to a coaching officer a man with years of experience you mostly cruise the roads until you get a little bit of war stories behind you he kidded s however pat pointed out that there is a con siderable amount of statistical work in volved and a lot of duties assigned an officer are routine believe it or not you have to be a really devoted person said the young constable his father who joined the rcmp in 1935 at the grand pay of 150 a day confirmed that police work can be dif ficult when you have to do your duty and people get mad at you it can be very frustrating he ex plained especially if you have no alternative mr downey recalled that when he enlisted in the rcmp one of the requirements was that you had to be single and live in the barracks you had to have seven years service before getting married and then you got married pay he also remembered that every recruit went to riding school to learn equitation something that has since gone by the board except for the musical ride mr downey himself was in charge of the world famous musical ride for seven years arid has escorted and been photographed with such celebrities as the queen and royal family and jacqueline kennedy mrs downey is very proud of her husbands achievements but she also remembers less romantic aspects of his work you cant have a normal life she said quietly and remem bered worry creased her pleasant face when- he was out on a job i never knew when be would come home wives never knew what their hugranhc were doing or where they were they doesnt have an easy stayed out until their life explained mrs assignments were downey matter of factly completed their husbands job a policemans wife always comes first police work seems to run in the downey family and patrick downey- had no hesitation about following in the footsteps of his father a former chief superintendent with the rcmp and his grandfather who
