theres always a large amount of fancy footwork involved in any soccer game and the player above displays a deft move to get around the lunging foot of the opposition the picture on the left shows the classic con frontation between the goalie and an unap- posed attacking player this tiine the goalie last weekends first major tournament for the new soccer league proved to be a great success for all those involved win ners or not the tournament put together in only a few days as it was organized following oakvilles decision to cancel their tourney consisted of over 20 teams and 480 players and coaches t h e t e a m s represented three divisions squirts atoms and peewees in the squirt division the- boys from malton walked off with the championship trophy defeating oakville in the final game by a 20 score malton went through the tournaments five games undefeated the stouffville squirts were the most successful of the three town teams they made it into the semifinals against the powerful malton squad but lost a 4- 0 decision the boys played a strong game and played well against a more experienced team the atom division saw the hillcrest team capture top honors as they defeated midland caledonia 20 in the final the stouffville team was knocked out in the first round losing to markham midland and malton h in peewee play it was the oakville squad who came away with the trophy on the strength of a 43 decision over a tough hillcrest team it was in the peewee division that some of the best soccer action of the- tournament occurred during a semi final game between oak- ville and chinguacousy it took the boys from oak ville till the second 10 minutes of overtime to defeat chinguacousy 21 many who saw that game compared it in ex citement and good play to that of the stouffville mexican match last month the action in the peewee play didnt stop there buu continued dramatically into the final following theirscmi- final heartslopperhe oakville team seemed emotionally drained and quickly fell behind as hillcrest popped in three unanswered goals however- thespunky oakville boys came back strong in the second half and tied up the game at the end of regulation play it took oakville another second 10 minutes of overtime before they booted in the championship winning goal the stouffville peewees didnt fare too well as they lost their lirst three games arid were also knocked out from further play overall most people were pleased with the tournament and alfons rubbens president of the league commented that many teams have ap proached him and asked to make the stouffville tournament an annual affair and according to mr rubbens plans are already being made to prepare for next year vxj3 s y ffwa the halls the thing and the above players arc keeping a close watch on the small spheroid in atom action play last weekend i he above picture and the one on top of that shows the agony of defeat for two stouffville goalies the above one is in peewee play and the force of the shot put the goalie on his back the top picture shows the stouffville squirt goalie desperately watching as the hall rolls slowly past his reach and into the net the game was against malton in semifinal action which stouffville lost 10 in squirt action on saturday these two players look hve theyre performing a com plicated ballet move with the hall while the rest of the players look on in amazement the picture on the right also shows some players frozen in a variety of graceful moves
