two had arrived and everyone wondered where the may kids were getting their energy stouffville jumped on bendale pjuchingjnhje t first inning schell singled dart doubled and mcbeth flyed out to score he also picked up third fourth and fifth placed spot the second fastest pigeon belonged to frank bolton with a speed of 96938 yards per minute mr bolton also had the sixth eighth and ninth placed pigeon i karl winterstein picked up seventh spot and ray gould had the 10th placed pigeon small inch they needed to take a mile and they capitalized to score three runs to capture the gold medal when the game ended the may club received a standing ovation as they left the field theres no doubt that jim chilvers was the sensation of the tour nament in two days he pitched 52 innings allowed 22 hits and struck out 85 batters dave dart was the umpires choice for best batter as batted a solid 425 mike lafleur at 250 steve schell at 380 steve spang at 333 and tim brown at 310 were stouffvilles other strong batters defensively catcher rob mcbeth second baseman lafleur and shortstop fockler sparkled chris jackson ken benson john pollard and rick ryck- man also performed well tom lehman recently released from hospital after an injury at work gave his teammates a real lift by virtue of his very presence after all was said and done an elderly citizen from kitchener whod watched every stouffville game summed it all up with what a team what a pitcherwhatagroup of fine young gentlemen by keith bolender for the past four years stouffville has been host to an international sporting event that many people know very little about the annft car rally however there is one person in town that has a wealth of knowledge on the complicated world of rallying terry epp of 595 elm road can be considered the founder of rallying in stouffville he has lived in town for the past four years and in troduced the sport to stouffville he has organized every local event so far mr epp comes from an extensive rallying background starting from 1967 in toronto he belongs to the maple leaf rally club which spon sors the stouffville rally mr epp had the chance to talk about his sport and made it clear that it is a lot more than just having a number of cars racing pellmell through some desolated back road he em phasized the difference between a race and a rally commenting that a rally does not depend on flat out speed but relies more on controlled speed situations and the ability to decipher a complicated list of map instructions terry explained that rallying which is very big in europe has a number of levels for the novice and expert to compete in starting at the bot tom the beginner can join club events of 50 to 60 miles in length that take only a few hours and have simple route in structions from there the next step is team rallying of which there are nine events in the series this rally is a little tougher but is not yet the true rally the next level is the metro rally conference involving five toronto region clubs it is an intermediate level vtith instructions now becoming harder stouffville is involved in the next level the ontario regional championship terry commented this series is what rallying is all about it combines the 200 miles they are rallys in the true sense where the navigator becomes more important than the driver in the sense that he must decipher the difficult instructions given to find the correct route there is also the ontario pro rally championship a deviation of the pure rally as it takes more speed than road instruction the canadian national championship is the next level and that plays a big part he is the team manager and co ordinator along with being a navigator and the route instructions are really tough is this series terry said but the top of the line is the nine event world championship series which can run up to 1000 miles long it is more of a speed event where the driver is more important there will be a world rally this september in quebec and terry is hoping to be part of it however any rally at navigator himself is well suited to organize the stouffville rally as through the jears be has come across almost every trick used in planning routes i cant make the rally too easy because the experts would become bored with it but on the other hand it cant be too difficult for the new drivers so i have to hit a happy medium i do try to put in a few tricks in the route instructions that could lead both novice and expert off the route stouffville rally organizer terry epp is installing a headlight conversion kit which no rallyist would be without the headlight has a halogen bulb which is many times more powerful than an ordinary one mr epp commentedthat with the halogen bulb along with four driving lamps a rally car can produce over one million candlelight power many rallyists refer to it as instant daylight intelligence and mental gymnastics of the navigator with the physical skills of the driver there are 10 rallys of approximately rally is for the experts they are usually 400 to 500 miles long and are weekend rallys you have to be an expert to run these and the navigator any level is always dif ficult mainly because of the unique set of route directions given before the rally terry who is a ballantrae hosts house ball teams at corn roast powerhouses for the stouffville ken may midget real estate team are jim chilvers and dave dart chilvers pitched four games back to back and almost led his team to the ontario summer games championship they trailed by one point and had to content themselves with a silver medal stouffville on sunday aug 28 ballantrae played host to the whitchurch stouff ville softball teams at a corn roast that attracted hundreds of people trophy presentations to all the top teams were also made at this time under the leadership of president molly mc- maningwell ballantrae convenor ernie lee presented coach don downey of the markham bantam boys with the championship trophy markham was followed by stouffville coach jim hargraves ballantrae coaches ron robb and warren foster and goodwood coach clare mcguckin for the third year in a row the bantam girls trophy went to pine orchard superbly coached by bob murby second place was unionville coached by jim short these were followed by stouffville i coached by harold claudd championship trophy presentation was made by bob rogers pine orchard was second coached by roy morton and dianne eves following were stouff ville i coach sharon bound ballantrae coach bob arbuckle and goodwood coached by bev coppins and ruth jackson the pine orchard squirt boys edged out goodwood ii to win the trophy presented to coach ron vanward by graeme mason sharon todd presented the second goodwood i coaches john elson and stann todd vandorf ii coach eric liversidge and stouffville iv coached by keith leach they tied with vandorf ii and stouffville iii coach steve mathews the undefeated goodwood squirt girls walked away with the championship trophy presented to coaches bob macdonald and barb st john by stann todd second place went to vandorfcoach rhonda king closely followed by a tie between ballantrae coach barb sweir and stouffville ii mrs stevens next was pine orchard coach dave summerfeldt and stouffville ii coach cec eidt a good sports manship trophy is also being awarded this year to the goodwood peewee boys coached by john taylor and louis gualiere keith bolender but i try to make it so they wont have much difficulty in getting back on track terry com mented terry stated that it takes him well over 100 hours to organize a rally and that most of the time is spent thinking up instructions i go over the route i want a number of times and then try to brainstorm some directions that will be challenging the instructions consist of informing the navigator what land marks to look for mathematical equations to find the correct road using a divider and special wording that could be taken two ways one that will be the correct way and one that would lead a driver well off the route there are control stations all along the rally route that each car must check in to at a certain time if he is over or under the predetermined time the driver is penalized points and the car with the least points win so reading the in structions correctly to hit the stations at the right time is important in winning a rally however sometimes mistakes crop up in the instructions terry commented that if there is an error in the in structions an expert will most likely pick it up and make the correct choice a novice however wont there was an error in this years rally so we decided to scrub the control station which was af fected there were no penalty points given it was the only thing we could do i try to make the instructions tricky but clear but sometimes these errors do happen theres not much we can do about it other than that the stouffville rally went off without a hitch stouff ville represents a prime spot for a rally as terry explained that its close enough to toronto to attract the cars but far enough away so that the cars can be out on the route just a mile from here so rally headquarters are not far from the rally itself we get drivers from canada and the united states for this rally and theyve all commented how good it is its one of the favourite rallys in the series they say it is challenging but not im possible ive tried to make it tough but not too tough or noone would come im pleased with the rally so far terry said terry gets help in organizing the rally from his regular rally driver gary thomas from ithica new york like a rallyist terry started organizing from the bottom with club rallies he said he could organize a national rally but that it would take too much time besides his rallying terrys full time job is as an english teacher in scarborough rallying is also a family affair for terry his wife linda drives while terry navigates for some of the pro rally events shes one of the better women drivers he says terry met linda at university and in troduced her to the sport and she quickly picked it up for the near future terry is anxiously awaiting the world rally event in quebec where he and gary thomas will get the chance to rally against the best in the world it will be an ap proximately 1000 mile rally 24 straight hours with 95 per cent of the rally being run on gravel roads it represents the epitome for any serious rallyist and terry said he wouldnt miss it for the world there has been only one other world rally event run in canada so terry doesnt want to pass up this opportunity first soccer tourney stouffville the first annual cen tennial soccer tourney will be held this weekend at various schedule was an exhibition game between the senior markham and stouffville teams on sunday these allstar teams were made up of coaches executive members and parents from each club markham claimed the final score was 32 in their favour the referee claimed they were correct as nearly as he could tell and stouffville claimed someone needed glasses but refused to reveal his name there were numerous injuries reported all of them serious we were told but the team physician just laughed when asked to comment on the report a return match is planned as soon as the players have recovered in the b
