8 the tribune thursday june is 1stt i whitchurch parents and teachers of whitchurch highlands public school students were treated to a modern rock and roll concert at the school last wed nesday evening students of music teacher bob burrows provided the en7 tertainment oc casionally joined by mr burrows- performing songs ranging from the pop charts to their own inventions mr burrows in troduced the modern music program to the school and judging by the enthusiasm and musical competence displayed by his mentors it is proving to be quite a success- the evening program y was held to raise money- to help purchase more of the expensive sound equipment needed to produce electronic music in this regard the evening was a bit of a letdown jim wilson and ian scott share their disappointment at their defeat in the election as soon as the polls began to come in it was obvious that bill hodgson was going to win the two are expecting another election before the next four year term is up because of minority government weather is affecting cropk fast changes in the weather are affecting crops in unusual ways corn for example is showing some scald symptoms bleached patches are on the leaves but this should be just a temporary setback the combination of very cold weather and weed control chemicals is more worrying her bicides used for grass control put on after the corn was up burned leaves in some fields last week with night tem peratures going almost to freezing the growing point on affected corn should still be alright so new leaves will appear but the delay will affect the crop some spotting- on barley leaves was evident last week too again unusually high tem peratures are respon sible and there should be no really serious effect alfalfa weevils were more numerous than ever this year many fields were cut early to save the crop and now the second crop has to be watched there is only one brood per year of this insect but there may still be eggs to hatch in the stubble it doesnt take very many weevils to strip the new growth so if they are evident the stubble should be sprayed furadan methd- xychlor or sevin can be used in the weed sprayer providing it will put on around 15 gallons of spray per acre material cost ranges from about 1 to 350 per acre more and more of our hay crop is being putup as haylage this keeps the highest possible feed value in- the hay providing it doesnt overhear overheating will only occur if the grant to black creek black creek pioneer village has qualified for a 60000 maintenance grant the honourable robert welch minister of culture and recreation recently announced the grant will enable the metro toronto and region conservation authority to carry on with their respective programs and public services in black creek attendance at the village to april 30 1977 was 34836 chopped hay doesnt pack tight enough and if the moisture level is kept between 60 and 70 per cent there should be no problem it isnt easy to get a whole silo filled at the right moisture but the advantages are worth a real effort a moisture tester helps we can do tests at our office or suggest testers for the job a program is in place now for rural countryside improvement funds are available from our m i n l st ry for municipalities to remove dead trees weeds derelict buildings or to build fences on cither public or private property-
