murphys son greg had the dubious thrill of town park saturday the stream seems to have been a favourite spot for discovering a longdead cat in another portion of throwing refuse the stream l dave wallace left and i lprne boadway combine forces to tackle some of the larger items in the creek mr wallace donated the use of his truck for hauling the trash away the vehicle badly needed washing before the day was out t town c lean up helpers scour parks streets and creek to spruce up for centennial visitors jean belisle and joyce nailer peruse the sectioned off map of stouffville mrs belisle was coordinator and the driving force behind the stouffville clean up mrs nailer is also a recycling depot member the whole effort was kept moving in an orderly manner by volunteers from the county breakers cb club who used radio equipped trucks to dispatch workers and equipment by john montgomery stouffville a large expeditionary force swept outward from thes baseball diamond throughthe park a special allvolunteer detachment made slow progres- through the underbrush lining the creek mobile units rushed recruits out to 1 prearranged disem- xiftbarkationjpoints and jfcjucentral command ranging idropped backfto the disgust recycling depot from where the attack was- coordinated the effort was not in spite of appearances to the contrary a military operation but merely an organized attempt sponsored by the recycling depot com mittee to clean up stouffville for the cen tennial year the expeditionary force consisted of 92 brownies guides and their leaders the all- volunteer detachment were those men who v undertook arduous task of cleaning duffins creek and the mobile units and central com- mandwere manned for the most part by mem bers of the county breakers cb club the volunteers met at the baseball diamond at 9 students i or aov ministration in all fairness though several students and teachers were out for the clean up including the familyof high school art teacher john roberts who were standing in for roberts as he had sliced his toe with a lawn mower the previous day many of the volun- jteers expressed feelings- from shock toj when they saw firsthand the amount of refuse in duffins creek the park and a few other places around town according to mrs belisle the county breakers were in strumental in making the clean up a success the county breakers coor dinated the whole operation from the recycling depot they moved groups of people around provided extra bags and boxes at a moments notice supplied and set up the p a system and some preferred to work instead of using their cars and radios r a real nice bunch of fellas anxious to help and really easy to get along with was mrs belisles judgement ralph spademen town garbage contractor between market st and the railway tracks boy scouts and cubs cleaned along the railway tracks friday night the lunch was donated by the recycling depot ladies auxiliary of the legion altona womens institute stouffville horticultural societyand the cancer society i cgit led by barbara hendren and with helen garrett and phyhs madill served the lunch asked whether she could see the clean up becoming an annual event mrs belisle replied we didnt have that much support that we could do it again if another club would like to take it on next year we would give them all the records mrs belisle said there was help from the kinsmen lions couples club and legion ladies but that support from many other local groups and individual members of the community was practically nonexistent many of the helpers and the high school property according to coor dinator jean belisle the three elementary schools summitview orchard park and st marks all had students out cleaning the surrounding sub divisions the previous day mrs belisle said that in spite of several at tempts by the recycling depot to get the high school involved at least to the point of cleaning their own property no action was taken by litter there was no charge for mr spademans services fran and denis sainsbury although they live out of town super vised a group of pioneer girls who cleaned all the streets south of main st this huge load of concrete and scrap iron was picked out of duffins creek almost ex clusively between the somerville st bridge and the market st crossing a distance not ex- ceeding 200 feet many of the volunteers were rrfftff outraged when they realized just how much filth and trash was spread about the town and especially the stream volunteer worker pauls barry is balanced on the back of the load
