editors mail thetribunbthursday december 2 ostfii v- people wi dear editor although a few ar ticles have appeared in iwo different newspapers we would like to take this op portunity to tell your readers about tne problems we are having with our water in ballantrae we dont feel that the whole story has been told for the powells it all started in january 1976 when their six week old daughter became ill and was hospitalized she was suffering from acute diarrhoea and vomiting a series of different formulas were tried during her ten day stay and her condition stabilized a she was brought home and two days later became ill again- after several telephone conversations 22 wait v with her pediatrician it was suggested that perhaps a water test was inrljfe and that she be put on a readymixed formula she improved when she was no longer consuming any of the water on february 6th a sample of the water was taken by a member of the acceptable maximum department of health in 2s0ppm at this point it newmarket this sample was suggested that second test on march 16th the results of this test showed that several of the chemicals in the water already exceeding maximum levels had again increased eg hardness 800ppm acceptable marimnm 80- 150ppm chloride sooppm june 28th in august mr smith went to the powells aod verbally gave mrs powell the results of then- tea as well as the results of their neighbours the huskissons at that time our other neighbours were never informed about the condition of their water i a week after mrs huskissons telephone conversation with mr he advised mrs powell smith we had a meeting that none of the family withcouncillor becky was submitted to the ministry of environment for a chemical analysis the results of this test were sentv to the powells on march 9 1976 stating it is advisable to find another source to feed the baby when asked for a reason for the surface water was getting into the well and ar sanitary seal for the well casing was advised after learning that the powells water was contaminated four of their neighbours some of whom were suffering from diarrhoea condition of the water the proceeded to get their represectative from the water tested derek newmarket health unit said that it was possibly from a natural source tbey proceeded to do a smith from the ministry of environment came to ballantrae and collected the samples that was should use the water for drinking or cooking purposes after waiting two weeks- to hear something- mrs huskisson finally con tacted mr smith by telephone to see how they stood concerning the drinking of their water mr smith advised mrs huskisson not to drink the water and suggested that we experimentally drill from our 65 foot level to a 90 foot level to see if we might find good water this is at the cost of 15- 20 a foot with no guarantee of good water board chairman provides new library facts figures dear the fund raising for the new library has got off to a fine sanders chairman whltchurchstouffville public library board merlyn baker local dumping is sell out to future total w6700000 v the library will use only 25 percent of the three and j rohequarter acres of land which cost 105000 that money was paid out of lot fees which the town had on hand also that cost will be recovered when lots at the back of the property are developed at present the town is using the property for full parking the businesses have been quick to respond to our appeal and we thank them for the many donations already madeturther donations are coming in each day please bring or send donations to the whitchurch stouffville public library- i as a community we are building a firstrate r open letter 0rganizer denies pop 6 to tricks dear sir i feel the public should be made aware of the following mr spademans tender for the total collection trucking and disposal of garbage for whitchurch stouffville was 58000 less than the next acceptable tender york sanitations wasthe highest of five tenders the town its v residents have been confronting not only a multinational foreign based company but also a govern ment bureaucracy which forced their wishes on us any council that makes adeal that would lets not sell out all future generations for the expediency of the moment even though weve been insulted with a bait of 80000 to do so respectfully merlyn baker editors note the bids for whitchurch- stouffville garbage collection opened feb 20 1975 showed spademans to be 219000 econo 267000 markham 281889 and york sanitation 285754- the bids all were premised on the fact that the garbage was to be shipped outside of the municipality mr baker told the tribune that result in jour garbage york sanitation also had going to york sanitation included an offer to knock dear mr mccarthy i had intended to write and thank you last monday for being public minded enough to allow two hours air time 4o prospective pickering councillors prior to the municipal election j i i it was of course disappointing that only 7 six out of the twelve candidates turned up and distressing that onef of them felt that the arrangements were inadequate and that the pop organization were vup to their tricks the charges by mr ken spratley are entirely without foundation and my only interest in get- ting all the candidates on the air was because there have been so few op- portunities for the electorate to hear and meet them s i am very sorry you have been unjustly ac cused of being manipulated bypop if we had been able to p control the media the pickering airport would have been defeated in 1972 i would like to take this opportunity ho congratulate mr gord taschuk for the way in which he ran the on air discussion with three- of the candidates last week and am looking forward to- hearing this weeks discussion yours sincerely isobelam thompson ed note the preceding was an open letter sent to radio station choo in ajax site no 4 would be making the town and its residents willing ac complices rather than unwilling victims it would then be impossible for all time to come for the town or private residents to ob tain a new supply of water if the present one is no longer potable except at our own ex- off 10000 from their bid uf the garbage was taken to the highway 48 site the 80000 mentioned is a reference to the fund the ministry of the en- vironment offered to set up to offset possible loss of water resources by residents adversely af fected by the dump wedley mayor gordon ratdiff and councillor merlyn baker we discussed our problem with them and they have since tried to assist us in solving it a suggestion was then raised that perhaps the york sanitation dump was causing our problem and a heavy metals test was indicated both the powell well and the huskisson well have had this test and su results were below maximum mr smith said he was sure that the dump was not our problem and then suggested road salt as a possibility tests to trace the salt- in the soil have been carried out but as yet we have had no results mrs huskisson phoned mr smith last week and was told that he hoped that by january there would be an an swer during the course of this conversation mr smith told mrs- huskisson that they could use the water for cooking directly contradicting what he had told mrs powell in august since february 6th of this year tlie powells have had five water tests done four on tap water chemical content still increasing egrchloride 1003ppm and oneon the dug portion of their well showing minimum chemical content the huskissons have had three tests done on tap water during this whole ordeal various reasons have been suggested for the cause of the con tamination and a variety of possible solutions have been given but not once has a definite solution or cause been fouxd we are not seeking to find someone to blame for our contaminated water just to find outjvhat is causing the con- tamination and come up with asolution have been told that there is no water conditioner or purifer sold that will take out the chemicals found in our water we have waited nine monthsand we may wait nine more before wecan use what most of us take for granted our water the powells and the huskissons ballantrae kindness heeded for pets people dear sir betty amadors concern for the worlds needy children is of course to be commended i am glad there are also people who want to show kindness to the helpless of the animal world lets hope there will always be lots of con cerned people in both areas j sincerely clarion baker rr2 stouffville hurry reupholster
