editors mail election interest 1e tribune thursday nov 6it mobile home park jjhs objections disgust reader dear sir i have been thoroughly dissappointed jwith a very large minority of our population who can only think of themselves c last week i read two reports from concerned property owners in the gormley and buttonville areas who opposed residential develop- merits lets be more specific the gorjnley 1 residents opposed a plan for a mobile home development the reasons they offered were that there was a stigma attached to mobile homes at one time people who lived in trailers were looked upon as gypsies who never stayed in one location for very long but times have changed young people and persons on a low or medium income can no longer afford a con ventional bouse cost of housing is completely out of reach for them their only chance therefore is a moderate or low priced house mobile homes offer their only hope the suggestion that such an area would end up as a slum area is both absurd and ridiculous with 35 units to the acres and proper subdivision regulations this could be an attractive area indeed the objections that the residents of cachet estates presented were even more disgusting here the property owners who already live on large parcels of land demand parkland complete with tennis courts for their own private use they also object to other people building their home on one acre lots too dose to their homes seems to me- that those so called con cerned residents care only about themselves they have no regard for the desperate shortage of housing they are so sdfish and hypocritical that in effect they are saying i have mine so to heck with you c van maris t rr 1 gormley dear sir in connection with the recent meeting of the candidates for position of school board trustee sponsored by the tribune at latcham hall last frontation provided an interesting insight into the practical concerns and philosophies of the candidates my concern is the verv small number of the thursday i would like to electorate interested offer the following enough in the education comments n firstly i would like to thank the tribune for its public interest in providing this forum for the candidates to present their views and concerns in various areas to the electorate the three candidates briefly stated the reasons for their interest in the position of the board caused by the recent resignation of colin barrett it was an op portunity to meet the candidates and learn something about them and their views on dif ferent issues this con- to meet the who shape system people poudts- during the past few weeks the tribune has published an article on each of the candidates whom they interviewed but surely one can learn more at an open meeting of this type where questions can be asked of each involved party and answered publicly i am sure many of the electorate will have no knowledge of the person behind the name as they mark their ballots on november 10th mrs betty campey gormley t lake speed limit labelled silly idea editors note the letters dealing with the proposal to limit the speed of motorboats on musselmans lake are not letters to the editor but were letters sent directly to council dear sir t i am a property owner at musselmans lake i also am a power- p j boat operator and water- skier on the same lake i am very disappointed in the story in the stouffville tribune of october 9 1975 to my disbelief i actually read that you are proposing a 5 mph speed limit for boats on the lake i didnt think that people in your position would be that in considerate not to i lake tod i small for if ast boats mention ignorant of the situation that actually exists here time and again it has been brought to your attention that the only boats on the lake that cause any problem or safety hazard are those that come from outside the whitchurch stouff ville area i do not know how dse to push this into your madeupminds on this subject so far i have got in my possession over 290 signed petitions stating this very fact i can get lots more but my time was quite limited this summer for collecting these petitions however i have planned a real drive starting mid may until mid june 1976 i am certain i ban come up with well over 500 petitions by both boat- operators and non boat- operators i would certainly think that you would take a survey of what we the taxpayers think to my knowledge not one of you live within view of the lake nor do you know the actual situation during a tdephone conversation with becky wedley i was dear sir thank you for your leadership and interest in regulating the high asked what i would like powered motor boats on d and 1 said ban ule musselmans lake y outside boats mrs this lake is just ilfjtwedley stated that it was eacres in size and iriour e- first time this opinion too small for suggestion was presented these high powered- m her and that she liked imotorsand boats it is not the idea but was unsure unusual to see motors of 150 hp or greater or as jmany as three water skiers being towed by one boat further it is not always the non residents who monopolize all of the lake and make the waters dangerous to swimmers and small craft j a one sunday af- jternoon in the summer otv 1970 we had the case where a resident of the area and the driver of a jmotor boatlost control of ithe craft and fell out of the boat the boat and motor ended up on the shore of our busy beach needless to say it was a miraclethat someone iwas not killed then on another o c c as i o n on musselmans lake where a woman swimmer iwas cut so badly by a propeller that she ended up having one leg am putated there are many large lakes in ontario far more suitable for water skiing and high powered motors the big fish go to the big ponds let us keep itiny musselmans for swimmers and small rcraft may we suggest that this lake be restricted to motors of 10 hp or smaller or ho motors at all a speed limit would help if it could be en- forced again thank you and we sincerdy hope we will have some motor boat control for the how to approach it or if it could be enforced i then said to mrs wedley that i would gladly start a petition to this effect if i could get her support mrs wedley not only said she would support this idea but also said she would gladly present the signed petitions to council i have several witnesses to this con versation i remember reading in one issue of the tribune that mrs wedley denied having any knowledge of this agreement whatsoever during a discussion on smy dock mrs wedley seemed a little annoyed that her name was on the petition without her first seeing it i tried- two weekends in a row un successfully to show the petition to mrs wedley but i had to get them circulated during this discussion on the dock with mrs wedley the idea was still supported but the question of policing came up all it says in the petition is mrs becky wedley our councillor will fully support us why the fuss i dont know summer of 1976 cedar beach park limited j vernt davies all the people i talk to at the lake are absolutely sure that the council has already made up their minds on this matter we are sure they listen to the odd person who com plains that they want all boats banned or hor sepower restricted but they dont want to listen to those who have boats or those that want the lake used by area 4 1 save on income tax up to 4000 a year may be deduct- ible for income tax purposes from your income if you invest it in a registered retirement savings plan while you also guarantee yourself a monthly retirement income for life ask me for details im with sun life of canada heinz daues cxu v r 3 claremofjt r telephone 924474 suniife6fcanada residents only to operate boats on the lake so far council has not asked any questions but they have stated what they want to do who are they do we not matter obviously not all we do is pay their salary you may think that because i have a boat is why im pushing this matter wrong all of us power boat owners have respect for each other and we obey the laws of the water we dont bother swimmers or rowboats or fishermen etc we dont buzz the shorelines or hazard others at all i really fed its about time you started listening to us with open minds not closed ones lets get some action on- this and your ideas are not always right lake wilcox dosed the area of the lake where boats were launched because all the residents there were complaining about outsiders now everything is fine over there all we have to do is dose up shalimar by revoking his license and all will be fine the other thing we the cottagers could do is find out what shalimar would want as a fee to dose off the beach and we could all chip in why not put a lower speed limit on the road around the lake- 35 mph is absolutely insane around this lake 20 mph seems much more sen sible it wouldnt matter anyhow because the police only drive around the lake every 4 hours my cottage has been broken into twice in two years and i know others fair to ban all motors dear sir congratulations to the whitchurch stouff ville council for augmenting a request for an official bylaw restricting the speed of powerboats as a lakefroht owner of 20 years i disagree with the petition of carl five mile speed limit ridiculous dear sir we are very much against the use of power boats on musselmans lake for obvious reasons which i am sure you are aware of furthermore a five mile an hour speed limit is ridiculous how isit going to be enforced are t going to have a police boat out on the lake i doubt it mr and mrs l karlsson kirk as reported in the tribune oct 23 he presumes that cottage owners have a right to use motorboats when others do not a more sensible and fair solution would be to ban all motorboats aridlet musselmrns lake return to the pleasurable past when swimmers did not fear being run down by two or three waterskiers dragging behind a power boat canoesi rowboats and sailboats are a ddight to watch but power boats disturb the peace pollute the water and create dangerous safety situations gmjobe po box 348 76 rupp liquid cooled on display bill walls
