the tribune thursday july 31 19is 5 letters to the editor writer claims article unfair ocdr sir i feuthe editorial in the july 24 issue of the tribune titled voters shortchanged was very unfair i do not believe mr barrett would have put so much time and effort into his campaign had he possibly known he was going to be transferred how many of our work force today could consider turning down the op portunity of advancement in their career for a secondary job the barretts have been very willing workers in several organizations in this community i am pleased to have known and worked with both mr and mrs barrett during the time mr barrett has been on the school board i have found him very co operative in answering the questions i have had on some school defects you feel the voters have been short changed i feel the majority of the voters will wish the barretts goodluck success and happiness in their forthcoming move mrs marion barry rr2stoufiville scurrilous attack draws rebuke dear sir never would i expect to see in the tribune a more scurrilous personal attack than that levelled against trustee colin barrett in last weeks editorial i really wonder what oc- casioned such an illogical editorial outburst barrett ran for public office at a time when candidates for such positions are not in overwhelming supply he was soundly sup- j- ported by the electorate and has performed diligently his task are we to condemn him for not having foreknowledge of such an event at the time of his candidacy are we to condemn him for not laying aside levervthing in the name of whitchurchstouffville if so then we must all stand condemned with him for not having presented ourselves for public office as he did for harbouring natural ambitions for success and recognition in our work as he does and for not being omniscient of all future occurrences as he too is not articles of this nature must ring repugnant in the ears of those of any sen- fy sifivity and decency and they do nothing to enhance the reputation of the tribune roger glazin stouffville man too busy for god dear sir howard minaker believes many people are selling their souls for perishing treasures and adds they are letting the eternal part of their being go unprotected countless can adians seem de termined to seek pleasure whenever and wherever they can but hedonism is not the only obstacle to the spiritual life work politics and causes of every variety are destined to separate many of us from our rightful places in eternity man may be spiritually blind indifferent and apathetic man is also too busy for god and thats tragic villiam e rae scarboro she likes c dear sir we in this house would miss the tribune coming in on thursdays although we miss very much the local rural news items i do not think of them as gossip as one letter you published recently considered them your readers look forward to them as main and interesting rural items i do like so much don bernards views and column jennie johnson rr4 uxbridge some facts about rabies dear sir we recently had a rabies scare on our street which resulted in con siderable panic- con- fusion and misin- formationaf ter- v checking with our veterinarian in town we learned some facts which i think will be valuable to your readers first rabies inoculations are 95 per cent effective in protecting an animal and this effect is cumulative yes you crn in other words if an animal receives an an nual shot he is virtually immune to the disease some people apparently were told the shots are ineffective and that is simply not true second an animal can only contract rabies after receiving a wound from a rabid animal you i would likely see evidence of the wound and at that point the precaution of quarantine is necessary third if an animal does contract rabies unknown to you it cannot be transmitted to other animals or people for approximately 14 days at that time he will be showing unmistakable signs of the disease and this would allow enough time to protect yourself- and others in summary rabies is a disease to be dreaded but you can easily protect your pet with annual inoculations you can alsoeliminate any doubts you may have about it by speaking to someone who is knowledgeable and that is only your veterinarian lynn taylor church st motor boat owner states objection dear sir i object very strongly to your editorial in the stouffville tribune of july 10 1975 which made reference to the glorified pond known as musselmans lake passive uses and other quoted phrases listed below i have had a motor boat in continuous operation for water skiing fishing and boating on this lake for 18 years and i want to do so for the next 50 if god permits mere is plenty of room for everyone when common sense prevails musselmans lake does have its share of oddities such as 427 cubic inch in- boards which show up occasionally i dont agree with this display of power either just the same as i dont agree with this unreliable display of power expressed in your editorial irresponsibility shows up in many forms even in newspaper management i fail to see why one incident mentioned above should get this type of exposure unless you are and i quote unimaginative from the general text of your outburst you are trying to make this spring fed lake look like a glorified pond where in fact the water is tested once a week for bacteria and it takes me about one hour to walk completely around by road i agree this lake is not large in comparison to lake simcoe but from the safety point of view accessability swimming fishing and water skiing i dont feel other areas nave as much to offer me if they had additional advantages i would move what the area needs is a little help to discourage large boats not the mass slaughter of the summer pleasures you advocate i would like to know on whos authority you used the word we which i underlined in your article i certainly do not want to be part of this we expression to get motors banned when you write an article on this subject and it is your opinion use i or state some names of lake residents i only know of one resident cottager who has expressed an opinion which is in agreement with yours if the whitchurch stouffville council cant handle a small garbage problem in our area just imagine what this controversy would be like if they banned motor boats on the lake which has had this use established for vears i am sure there would be a second airport dilemma there was no mention about the im portant winter season in this recreation area if you think the serenity is disturbed and safety in jeopardy in the summer you ought to witness the noise and environmental disturbances from skidooscome freeze up time how would council legislate on this sport with the water being crystallized in winter does not exempt them from lake use i feel some people are losing sight of the year in which we live we will be hearing low flying iets all year round skidoos and cars on the lake in winter and motor boats in the summer for some time to come what other creations of mans ingenuity are we going to be faced with in the future there are lakes around where you can have passive uses for those who want this lifestyleiysnotfor me and its not for musselmans lake my opinion to those who are not happy is move and leave the area alone if i may quote an additional phrase and remind you- and council on to other business vi gagrace toronto editors note the we expressed in the editorial is commonly called the editorial- we and it represents the opinion of the tribune
