thursday august 20 1970 the tribune page 9 history of goodwood now available at library by eleanor todd goodwood gwen dowswdl has completed her history of the century city area and has placed a copy in stouffville library her effort has been con siderable and she has uncovered many forgotten facts she has learned that goodwoods beginnings were shortly after 1840 thirtyfive years after the first settlers entered uxbridge township our first settlers on village land were the chapmans laperes purdys shavers and mcgills most ontario villages grew up around a sawmill but apparently goodwood didnt have one until after the toronto nipissing railway went through in 1871 our first settlers drew their logs to siloam to be cut gwen has discovered that our first church anglican was built in 1859 after much encouragement from mr john shaver chas plewes home who at tended and cleaned it as long as it remained mr michael chapman donated the land the lot north of plewes apparently the cemetery was on the east side of the road our first hotel and post office were in the bill mcquaker house and were operated by michael chapman it was difficult to get teachers to preside over our first school bp garage because there were so many bears in the area by 1867 the log school was no longer big enough and the old wagon shop across the street started and abandoned by mr mcgill was used until a suitable building could be erected the new railway cut off part of the school lot so a new lot on top of the hill was obtained and by 1871 the school was ready for miss scott and her 90 pupils the trustees then were thomas todd colman wagg and wb watson the present old school was built in 1893 gwen is now enjoying a trip to the west coast but will be back in time to begin her duties as a high school teacher in london ontario grade 7 teacher miss nancy wilson has left with a group of teachers for a 3- week tour which includes stopovers in honolulu hong kong tokyo and a visit to expo the les
