school bell friday june 5 at 3 pm to officially open the claremont conservation field centre the educational facility is the third to be established by the metropolitan toronto and region conservation authority students from metro and regional schools have been taking weeklong and weekend courses at the centre since march 31 they live in at the centre and receive a basic grounding in conservation education including water conservation flood con trol plant life weather and soil conditions one of tfie highlights of the official opening ceremonies will be a presentation to miss blanche e snell a retired teacher of york memorial collegiate who established one of canadas first conservation education courses in conjunction with the conservation authority in 1953 the course was the forerunner of the authoritys present con servation education programs one of miss snells students in her first class was terry carr who is now supervisor of the claremont field centre the claremont area is an ideal outdoor classroom it contains the duffin creek two smaller streams artesian wells and ponds there are about 150 acres of natural woodlot containing both hardwood and softwood tress much of the marginal land was planted in 1962 with shrubs and food plots to encourage a high wildlife and bird population in addition to the school year program the centre is used during the summer months it offers a teacher education program during the month of july and in august it is available to teenaged boys and girls at separate periods as a summer camp boys will attend during two 5day periods aug
