im portance of the quality of the environment in their daily lives is becoming an increasingly vital topic a tangible example of its growing importance is reiiected in the establish ment of a third con servation field centre by the metropolitan toronto and region conservation authority at claremont the new inresidence field centre located in the claremont conservation area in pickering town ship opens its doors to its first class of students on tuesdav morning march 31 the first class at the centre will be 36 grade 11 students from torontos oakwood collegiate in stitute they will be ac companied by robert putnam head of the schools geography department and miss marion kalmuk a teacher at the school the class will be welcomed to the centre by mrs florence gell and elgin h card of the authoritys executive committee both have been active in the development and establishment of the three field centres which have been accomplished through financial assistance provided by the metropolitan toronto and region conservation foundation along with a 50 per cent grant from the departmement of energy and resources management the students and teachers will live at the field centre during the school week and the students will take courses in conservation education as part of their curriculum the claremont field centre will operate con tinuously on a weekly and weekend basis and has already been booked by schools and other con servationoriented groups to the end of the year classes from metro and region schools will use the 400acre claremont area classroom for a week at a time during the summer months the facility will be used to provide con servation courses and seminars to teachers and summer students offered by both the college of education and the ontario department of education in cooperation with the authority the claremont con servation field centre is in effect an eastend ex tension of the nowfamous albion hills conservation field centre the cold creek field centre is the other such facility to be developed by the authority both albion hills and claremont centres have inresidence facilities for ac commodating 40 students and teachers employees
