york county farmers press assessment battle york county farmers from all the rural municipalities in the county have joined in a fight to reduce assessment on farm land farmers are being asked to contri bute 10 to retain legal help in presenting the case to date more than three hundred farmers have joined and a bramp ton legal firm has been retained some members of the group say the big jump in farm land assessment could tax them out of business farm assess ment on the whole county is six times what it was last year and the farmers feel that the sudden jump will impose an undue tax burden on them we dont mind paying our fair share of taxes said g f whittamore of rr 1 markham the groups secretarytreasur er but we maintain that once you start to assess farm land at its sale value our tax becomes out of line in comparison with the services we receive and ability to pay mr- whittamore empha sized that the group is protesting farm land as sessment only and not the assessment for farm buildings county assessment commissioner don wright has said that the new as sessment will not result in undue tax because each municipality mill rate will drop in proportion with the assessment increase he said he doesnt believe the farmers have a case for reduction of their as sessment rut farmers ex pect a substantial mill in crease they admit this canot be accurately dieted at this time theyre still worried whittamore said group originally wanted to test three cases in each municipality but lack of cooperation by the as sessment commissioner made it impossible for our legal firm to make test cases before the court of revisions began assessment commis sioner wright said he felt the market value criterion is not unfair to farmers the farmers organiza tion was formed last month at a meeting in vandorf called by the federation of agriculture the federation is not in volved in conducting the groups business however pre- but his buy nowfiy late i 85 be our guest visit the rations its good to have an idea how hay and sil age stacks up good firstcut hay has been averaging around 1396 protein and corn sil age close to 396 these levels are a little higher than we normally expect grain rations with usual amounts of protein should do a good job this winter except where hay was cut late or is mostly grass we took the samples from farms at schombcrg king and woodbiidge the tests are done at the university of guelph for a fee of five dollars hay samples are taken with a 2bof ing device that cuts a core out of several bales and these are mixed to rheumatic pain rumacaps sample protein and moisture content are determined in the test we got a sample of se condcut at grant leon ards at schombcrg that set a record for protein at 19896 a few haylage samples were done and they ran a little higher in protein than hay likely due to earlier cutting dates we did some tests on homegrown grain mixes too protein levels in grain are a lot more con stant than in the rough ages but we wanted to find out how close our estimates checked out with an actual test on mixtures made up for dairy and beef cattle generally the differ ence was less than one percent so that most of the time protein content can be worked out on pa per accurately enough the only hard part is knowing for sure the ac tual amounts going into the mixture these are often mea sured by volume with some guessing to get the weight the margin of er ror can upset the whole deal here because the weight of a bag a tank a scoop or a shovelful can vary all over the place add the complication of high moisture shelled corn or cob corn or corn and cob meal and the job of mixing quantities ac curately takes some time and thought the feed analysis serv- ice is one of the tool that can be used to set a
