leaders mrs kerswill and mrs wideman the office of the warden county of york oct 7th 1969 to the property owners of the county of york you have recently received your new property assessment prepared by the assessment commissioner of the county all of us have had substantial increases in our assessment the county assessment department has tried to establish a fair and equitable basis for the assessing of your property and have used the ontario provincial manual of assessing as a guide increased assessments does not necessarily mean increased taxes the municipalities of york county will require approximately the same amount of money to operate in 1970 as they have in 1963 taxes are arrived at by multiplying the assess ment by the mill rate thus an increased assessment will mean a decreased mill rate in all our municipal ities in york county signed stewart rumble warden school to museum continued from page 4 earl toole whitchurch township council for eleven years warden of york shop which needed a masterworkman- and three journeymen to han dle the business there were two hotels doing a praise association uxbridge twp ratepayers associations and municipal councils arc usually at odds with each other but such is not the case in uxbridge township at a meeting sept 29 councillor clark muirhead commended the organiza tion on its efforts and suggested that its officers should not be discouraged through lack of attend ance at public meetings mr muirhead noted that one year ago there was no association in exist ence although no date was set it was suggested that a representative of reven ue properties association be asked to attend booming business before the days of temperance societies there was also a greenhouse and a thriv ing ice business the ice being cut from the mill pond and drawn by sleigh in all directions in 1857 the canadian northern railway chose to pass through newmarket giving that town a big boost and giving bogart town a setback from which it never recovered it is the hope of the museum board that the history of all the township can be preserved in all available detail the new board met oct 2 to hear mr v n styrmo museums advisor histori cal branch dept of pub lic records and archives speak on the functions and administration of a mus eum there are grants payable by the ontario government which will equal amounts expropriat ed bythe municipality up tol00000 these grants are retroactive to allow for two years of development and are paid after a mus eum has been open to the public for 360 hours a museums purpose is threefold besides collect ing and preserving items of historical interest it provides an educational service in two ways the public comes to the mus eum or the museum in small sections goes to the public for example a school could have a demon stration of spinning card ing and weaving in its own classroom a good museum is also a tourist attraction and tourism is ontarios third largest industry 75 of a
