thursday apr 3 1969 the tribune page 7 home ownership a peoples right vxxxvkxxr vvvv by john roberts mj yorkslmcoe yorksimcoe my column usually contains items about political events in ottawa or deals with my own personal views on cur rent issues of interest for the past two weeks i have changed this prac tice instead of giving you my opinions i am asking for yours the third in a series of questionnaires is published here if you wish to reply please write to me at the house of commons ottawa question 3 in canada most people want to own their own house preferably comple tely detached surrounded by some green lawn more people in canada own their own home than on the average in any other county yet some town planners and economists tell us that we pay heavily for this passion for home ownership it ties up an enormous amount of capi tal which might otherwise be used for the develop ment of our untapped re sources it may be a poor investment for the indi vidual in comparison with what comparable equity in vestment would bring it hinders the mobility of la bour which will be re quired by a society trans formed by automation and industrial change it im poses on government heavy expenditures on schools roads services and other utilities which must be shouldered by tax payers as a whole these experts suggest we should persuade more of the public to live in rented accommodation and establish higher den sity high rise accommoda tion rather than a subur bia of selfcontained owner houses but without doubt most people wish to own their own homes do you agree that gov ernment should try and en able every family in can ada to own its own home patricks win truck tender stouffville pat rick motors limited have submitted the lowest prices on two new trucks for the
