curriculum at sdss by eric knabe pant ii as previously mentioned in part one of this series one of the main education al branches in the ontario secondary schools is sci ence technolohv the se lection of suitable techni cal subjects is based noon the following princidlcs 1 subjects must relate to the present needs of our modern society and industry 2 subjects should have flexibility to accommodate almost constant changes in technological advance ment 3 the family of technical subjects must have a broad enough base to give the student an overall un derstanding of the various fields of technology we are concerned with funda mentals rather than the treatment in depth which characterizes the tertiary or post secondary school levels of education 4 subjects must be flex ible enough to accommo date individual needs and abilities of the students the following science technoloav and trades subjects are offered at stouffville dist secondary school basic drafting electricity auto mechan ics machine shop basic woodworking boys oc cupations girls occupa tions building technol ogy architectural drafting and electronics tho student may enter one of the following pro grams in the science technology and trades branch five year stt four year stt two year occupational pro gram the optional pro gram four and five year arts science students the five year stt leads to grade 13 from this course a student may enter university courses students who intend to enter courses such as en- gineering or architecture for example will receive a good grounding in re lated technical knowledge in this program 20 per cent of the students time is spent on technical sub jects students of grade 9 will receive instruction in up to four technical sub jects a graduate of the five year stt program will have received instruc tion in most of the tech nical subjects offered in the school in the four year stt program approximately 20 percent of the grade 9 and 10 students time is allowed for instruction in five technical areas for his grade 11 course a stu dent may select two of the following subjects auto mechanics architectural drafting building tech nology electronics and machine shop in grade 12 the student will contin ue his studies in one of the two grade eleven sub jects and may select one additional subject in grades 1 1 and 12 onethird of the time is given to technical instruction dur ing grade 12 the stt students take part in an experience training pro gram where they receive onthejob training in re lated local and out of town industrial establishments graduates from the four year stt courses will enter industry for further training or may choose to enter a postsecondary school level of education such as the colleges of applied arts and technol ogy- the twoyear occupa tional program is designed to equip students with fundamentals in a variety of practical skills mainly hairdressing restaurant services retailing and sewing for girls boys re ceive training in auto servicing welding and carpentry half of the school time is applied to practical or trades sub jects and half to instruc tion in a variety of aca demic subjects during part of the regular school time students
