comple ment of 17 men with a total of 240 years of ser vice about onethird of them have an average of some five years senice which means that out of the remainder there is an accumulation of 174 years of service and experience in fighting fires with these facts and many others in front of him i wonder why the junior member of council has kicked up so much dust about hiring a fire chief there is little doubt the present members of the brigade are much more familiar with the town and its buildings than anyone outside would be there is also little doubt that there has to be suffi cient experience within the brigade to handle the job when the previous chief was hired he was considered acceptable without any written or oral tests because he was an experienced man when he resigned it was hinted he was an amateur at the business because it was now necessary to hire a professional in his place there are some facts of life the members of council particularly the fire committee chair man shouldbe made aware of first of all there are no amaieur firemen all firemen are profes sional some work at it full time others as with markham village volunteer it doesnt matter in any case because when fire occurs they all wear the same pair of shoes those of the professional to say a professional will be hired as fire chief is merely another way of saying the job that has been done up to now is unsatisfactory and yet the same people mouth words of commendation it boils down to a lot of hogwash either way if improvement is necessary thats one thing but if it isnt there is no need to look beyond the village for a replacement for the chief also for the fire chairmans information the men on the fire brigade are volunteers no one asked them to act as firemen no one told them neither did they sign any agreement with the village that they now have to live up to they took on the job to protect the property interests of the village from fire and to fight fire when it occurred they did not have to do this then they do not have to now saying they have a duty to the village is nonsense they have already ful filled their duty and fortunately and in spite of the fire chairman are still doing so they can however withdraw their services any time they desire and when they are slapped in the face with remarks that label them as amateurs and when they see ads in outoftown papers for re placements if replacements are available here they just might have good reason to withdraw their volunteer services there has been a volunteer brigade in mark ham village since 1856 and with only one excep tion it has functioned well over the years in the last fifteen years it has become a closeknit or ganization well prepared to handle its duties it has however only taken the present council lit tle more than half its term to reduce a smooth working organization to a state of almost com plete demoralization this has been accomplished simply by councils operating in an undiplomatic and amateurish manner in its attempts to replace a fire chief a man who uses a pick and shovel is a pro fessional he doesnt need to carry a certificate in his pocket to prove it because it is selfevident in his work this same thing is true of volunteer firemen if markham village is bound and bent on using professionals in its operation the best place to start would be at the top perhaps if the present members of council were to stick to their own professional vocations markham village would elect professional municipal councillors in their place at least that way it might not take 328 meetings a year to get something done town tag days a courtesy request bloomington christian gospel church rev r l langford pastor sunday september 15 1968 bible school for all ages 945 am 11 am
