pupil transportation problems by molue stewart markham members of the markham village public school board may jvell hold their aching heads when it comes to school bus transporation issues decisions made pro and con concerning public school children be- ing transported from home to classes and back must be handled with a delicacy comparable only to the caution used by a 200 pound heavyweight trying to walk over eggs without breaking one what pupils should have school bus privil eges who should and who should not pay for school bus services which sections of town are eligible for public school transportation ride 400 yards last year the public school board was faced with a poser which al though skillfully maneuv ered may still ride back at the end of the year when right of way for access between rouge sub division and sherwood estates was not forth coming parents with chil dren attending armstrong public school were per turbed youngsters some mere infants were com pelled to walk a hazardous section of highway 7 a debatein between worried parents and the school board resulted in an agreement that since the bus already shuttled between franklin street school with a pickup of small fry at christmas court and armstrong school rouge subdivisi on children could also be included it was stipulated the measure was to be a tem porary one until such time as the road to sherwood estates was put in since no deviation of the bus route was necessary costs for the service were waiv ed so 65 pupils travel 400 yards safely to their classes a technicality consider the problem further along on highway 48 were children from princess and rouge streets have walked to school along a recognized danger strip of thorough fare there has been one child fatality and several accidents for many years when deputyreeve a laidlaw appealed to coun cil ten years ago he was turned down last year laidlaw went to the school board and contend ed that since rouge sub division children were being transported to school those from high way 48 south were entitled to school bus service as well this time he got the co operation of the board but due to a technical ity of just where the town limits were he was told parents of children using the bus would have to pay resulting costs the financial wrinkle was ironed out when laid law personally saw to it that each family with philr dren included in the bus pickup paid s2110 per month no relief with everyone taken care of the school board can relax for a while now mothers of the rouge subdivision secure in the knowledge that jun ior is being safely bussed to school and back are viewing the temporary ser vice with trepidation and along with this the board has to contend with the dilemma of the trans portation of children from christmas court who have no alternative but to walk along highway 7 beginning mar 17 rev e pannabecker of north bay will conduct a series of meetings for the bev erley acres united mis sionary church
