november of the proposal to institute county boards of educa tion came as a surprise to most people including ma ny in the department of education who first learn ed of it in the following mornings paper as a re sult considerable confu sion has arisen and in de cember all the trustees in york county held a meet ing to discuss the situa tion mr hallman the ar ea superintendent repor ted to the gathering that the government expected to publish some guidelin es early in january which would assist trustees in planning the change which is proposed to be effective at the beginning of 1969 in the meantime many trustees are of the opinion that the county of york should at this stage be di vided into two area boards some of the reas ons given for this include the fact that the southern six municipalities with their proximity to metro toronto have been exper iencing an unusually sharp increase in class room requirements in the last year there was a 42 increase in primary school classrooms in addition the southern six have already been cooperating through a voluntary orga nization known as the york south regional edu cation committee most trustees from the north ern half of the county seem to share this opinion that two boards should be permitted for at least ths early years when town ship school area boards were organized a few years ago markham town ship was allowed to have two boards instead of the regulation one board and it has worked out very well at the time of mr robarts announcement these two boards were in the process of coming to gether voluntarily efforts are therefore being made to persuade the depart ment of education to es tablish the two boards in stead of one at least in the initial period owrc the ontario water re sources commission owrc held a population of over 7000 the council is find ing it difficult to finalize its decision the members are asking for recommen dations from ratepayers all names submitted will be considered carefully that oxy gen units donated to the whitchurch police had been responsible for sav ing several lives she pointed out that both adults and children had benefited through his gen erosity everything he deal for whit church said mr hast ings whenever there is a job to be done he can al ways be counted on to give more than his share of time and effort mrs howard barkev stouff ville rr4 and mrs grant wells stouffville rr2 also expressed favor with the selection of mr richardson he has lived in the township all his life both he and mrs richard son have taken a great interest in all affairs with in the community said mrs barkey mrs wells said that mr richardson had played an active part in the progress of the township and had helped out in many ways in vari ous programs during cen tennial year the name of clifford wallwork was mentioned by several persons con tacted by the tribune merlyn baker said that mr waliwork had been active on the railantrae school board the york county hospital board the town ship council and planning board and in community recreation activities hes done a wonderful job more than most people know about he said mr baker said that a second nominee would be ex- reeve ross farquharson for most of the same rea sons another vote for mr wallwork came from mrs ken tranmer stouffville rr2 who does mr wallwork feel should be so honored he offered three selec- tions individuals worthy of the award they recom mended the name of cap tain schuyler snively of lake wilcox mrs rich ardson said that both cap tain snively and his wife had been extremely active in war
