pat 12 the tribune tharj wy 14 1966 miue in this corner by ron wallace fix t up or close t up last week in this column i commented on three children that drowned in northern ontario this week i found a spot only four miles from here where the same possible tragedy is bound to occur sooner or later as a matter of fact one person four years ago did drown in this area its island lake norlh of musselmans on the east ern limit of whitchurch township on the north shores of this small but dangerous body of water is a park at least a fair excuse for a park it consists of a few nice shade trees plenty of grass about a pailful of beach sand and a couple of inconvenient conveniences this park costs the swimmer money if he drives his car onto the property people who go there have but one intention and that is to beat the heat in a cool lake yet this lake is completely without supervision not a lifeguard for miles nothing just a lake holding any where from fifty to 500 people i was there for about two hours and noted a num ber of things that were definitely wrong and that if not corrected more bodies are going to be pulled from the water first of all no guards and thats bad since the peo ple are paying for something and its not the scenery at least one qualified swimmer should be on patrol throughout the duration of the park being open under an admission fee its obvious that someone is reaping the profits and is not putting them back into the area thats evident in the inconvenient conveniences the change houses theres a compliment are in one building male on one side female on the other to ob tain the privacy most people desire one has to hold the doors shut with one hand and change with the other the picnic tables the ones than can be used are badly in need of paint and each one can guarantee at least one sliver per person one table is piled in a heap on the beach as though it were fuel for a huge bonfire the grass is part weeds and the sand is baked clay garbage and refuse is strewn about and that includes broken soft drink bottles the cars are parked in a haphazard fashion and in general there is no organiza tion whatsoever the lake itself is the second problem it drops off sharply only a few feet from shore and although the shallowest part has a good firm sand base deeper out it becomes a muddy slime a friend of mine equipped with the bare essentials of skin diving took a tour around the lake underwater and came back on the beach with this report i would dive deep and suddenly out of nowhere would be a bush and id have to surface to miss it the entire bot tom is covered in long stringy weeds perhaps six or seven feet tall in some places they break water the friend was sporting a healthy share of mud and cake sand that had been picked up while on the tour it was dirty and the dust blowing from the beach across the water caused me to choke on the air i was breathing well we cant blame the weather on the dismal shape of the park but how many sand beaches are there that turn to dust when the wind blows not many thirdly the people the silly people who by their actions cant have a brain in their heads across the en tire lake as far as the water boundaries extend are doz ens of air mattresses and floating rafts and other home made or storebought gadgets that look inviting in a shop window but are deadly on the water half of these people are using the rafts etc because they cant swim if one should ever decide to spring a leak its game over for the occupant once in those weeds noth ing short of a miracle will save him there was a young family situated nearby who had joined the hordes to beat the heat the little boy who could barely walk stumbled down the crag filled beach entered the water and fell flat on his face the father who was standing in the water quickly scooped his son from the lake gave him a couple of slaps on the back and the kid was line the father laughed at the big joke he had just witnessed i laughed too at the father two other men in their early twenties were splash ing about merrily in the water and neither it was obvi ous could swim a stroke if one ventured out over his head he would frantically dog paddle back to safe ter ritory stand up with a puffed up chest and strut around as if to say can ya beat that i was over my head and im still alive another incident that caught my eye was the most common of all the good old beach ball being tossed around in the water among four people the ball got away from one receiver and with the stiff offshore wind drifted into deep water two of the four swim mers went after it swimming as fast as they could they couldnt catch it and finally decided to let it go both had to tread water for a few minutes in an effort to catch their breath before making the return trip to shore about 90 per cent ol the people in attendance were from the city and in their anxiety to find water they dont care what the situation is maybe they dont real ize that places such as this arc required to have some sort of coordinal ion and supervision and if they have nt they should be closed if the owners whoever they might be insist on taking peoples money without offering at least a half decent place to swim then they should put up signs indicating that no guard is on duty and that the swim mers enter the water at their own risk as it appears now anyone di owning there places the responsibility squarely on the heads of the operators in short the park should be closed permanently il nothing is done to fix the place up or temporarily if the operators leel their conscience picking at them claremont 43 stock car racer pies following crash sammy snider 29 of butlonville wellknown stockcar racer died in hospital on thursday follow ing a
