projects july 2 1966 dear mr editor concerning your editorial of last week time to bury the hatchet the horticul tural society feels your re marks were most unfair over the years the society has had numerous projects which now cease to exist the gardens at both ends of town yielded to other development of the space the garden at the entr ance to the station was a disappointment money time and effort was spent on shrubs bulbs white stones from the north fill and levelling what happened to it in winter salty snow several feet high was piled on the shrubs until they were destroyed cars and trucks parked on the grass creating deep ruts even the guard wire erected was con tinually being broken down there was once a lovely fountain erected at this spot in memory of mr hodgins horticultures early presi dent where is it today our flower bed in front of the library was continually a chore from trampling and trash the society had nice flower beds at one time in the sangster part of the park the park needed toilets so they were erected just inside the hedge and rose bushes mr public is so destructive the park board finds it difficult keeping these in shape we remember only too well all the hard work and si 100 that went into cleaning up the old arena area much was involved in creating our park garden where the swimming pool is now just as it was becoming a thing of beauty we were asked to announcing widemans church vacation bible school july 11 to 22 time 530 00 pm make plans to bring your children tor further information telephone the supt a d grove 6103118 bfffim pork chops lb 95 fresh lean hamburg 2 lbs 75c pure pork sausage lb 70 spend less get more for your moncv fretz bros a harper kj5j currmont meat mabket thone 6103123 give it up all our members teel that the swimming pool is of more value to more people however those interested in putting the pool in the garden offered no space or help in relocat ing the garden elsewhere after many disappoint ments and hard work is it any wonder we are discour aged any bcautification done outside the pool as you suggest would likely meet the same fate as our other projects your editorial makes it appear that the horticul tural society is not interest ed in town beauty we as sure you that such is not the case wc have been work ing quietly and steadily the many lovely flower ing crab trees that are on front and side lawns were the inspiration of the horti cultural society as was many of the clumps of white birch recipients of these tccs were assisted in plant ing them in spots where their beauty could be seen from the street the parkview home has been our project this year as well as last year we know that our donations of trees and shrubs will be appreciated and given con tinuous care a good many who criticize the society are not members and what can one do these days without money and helpers horticultural public work is done by the members mostly the executive we do not have the finances to hire work done our mem bership fee is one dollar and half of this wc give back to the members in plants or bulbs to beautify their own gardens almost every other town gives their horticul tural society a grant often a substantial one to help with their work our socie ty receives no help from council this society like others is finding it hard to get working personnel especial ly those who are willing to slug it out in the heat for no remuneration and little res- pect for what they do it even seems in this day and age that folks who want nice shrubs almost have to guard them on their own property with a shotgun last good friday morning one of our members came out his door jus in time to sec an adult man who had stopped his car at the en trance to the driveway walk his dog on a leash up the sidewalk to the shrubs at the corner of his house while tie wife and children mrs eva cadieux mrs eva cadieux of brantford wife of the late patrick cadieux formerly of stouffville died on mon day june
