system which will make the maxi mum contribution to the net income of the farm as a whole prof darel plaunt agricultural economist un iversity of guelph advised speaking on the econom ics of the corn crop at far mers week 66 prof plaunt cautioned farmers that corn is no certain route to high er profits up to you there are some circum stances in which a good crop of corn will make you more money than any other cropping system he said there are other circum stances in which corn can not compete with small grains and hay it is up to you to find out which system or what combination is likely to be most profitable for your particular farm dont grow corn prof plaunt said unless you are sure it will contribute more to your net income than any other crop using the same resources look on the corn crop as only one potential part of an overall farming system budget out or estimate the returns to be made before you try to put it into prac tice farmers using gastight silos can expect to pay s200 more in annual costs than those having concree sjs prof p a wright maintain ed get more use storage costs per ton he suggested were from 90 cents to 180 higher for the gastight silo in general it is safe to suggest that owners of gas- tight silos use them to a greater degree than do ow ners of concrete silos all other factors remaining con stant this additional use is necessary to decrease the in fluence of substantially higher overhead costs whether extra use or pos sible added advantages of gastight silos covered t additional expense prof wright was not prepared to say without a much more
