of five 100 ontario scholarship awards could not hold precedence over the an nouncement by board chair man walter heaton that the principal mr b j newell would retire at the conclusion of the june term mr newell whose connection with markham high school dates back to 1944 has already submitted his resignation mr heaton said that it had been accepted by the board with re gret looking back to the commen cement of 1944 mr newell re called that 17 students had re ceived their honour graduation diplomas on that night that was 21 years ago he said that there were 15 graduates from grade 12 and 13 from grade 10 the board of that day compris ed the chairman max reesor and members dr houghton reuben myers john cattanach and john bayes academic awards totalled 17 today stu dents may receive awards week the york presbytery of the united church of canada stated that within a 20 year period 37 churches would be closed and 11 new churches would be built one of the communities slated for expansion sports for gain after 130 pm on sundays 3 are you in favour of a bylaw to provide for biennial elections for mem bers of the council 2year term public school staff teacher mr gary grundy has had his right arm confined to a sling for several days due to an infection mr hal dafoe main st w was the winner of a 25 cash prize at a lucky draw held by the markham veterans assoc councillor alvin farmer ivan mclaughlin seeking r election the six others in th field include henry nauta lawrence provost edward skead pat cashman lawrence hennessey and frank williams reeve ross farquharson and deputyreeve stewart burnett were returned by acclamation the sudden withdrawal of councillor alvin farmer as p candidate caught even his clos est associates by complete sur prise he accepted a nomination on friday evening and declared at that time that he would stand again however he failed to sign his qualification papers prior to the nine oclock dead line on saturday night in last years election mr farmer top ped the polls nine candidates are in the running for the five public school area board seats in cluding norman iocklcr mclvin baker and dr j morris smith all seeking reelection and newcomers mrs irene ba con w good ivan kay c w brillinger mitchell anderson and alfred kramer can hold two posts vandorf at the nomi nation meeting here on friday night merlyn baker rr 2 stouffville appeared to have a seat on the 196667 whitchurch twp council pretty well sewn up if audience enthusiasm was any indication he was given a rousing ovation from the floor however mr baker was pre vented from qualifying- as a candidate since he still held the position on the board of the stouffville dist high school he said that he was not aware of this technicality at the time candidates in
