named anne arnold and a large country named canada were just beginning to grow up today both are still going strong anne arnold grew up with canada and last week she turn ed 93 years old born june 13th 1872 anne was raised in georgina town ship and attended schools in bellhaven in september of 1895 she married thomas w rye a farmer in the area the couple settled down near mount albert and began a long happy life mrs rye today recalled her past experiences of farm life she raised four children three girls and a boy most of the farming was done manually and there was never a dull moment for her she ba ked her own bread churned her own butter and lived hap pily without the convenience of cars electricity and telephones she took many of her prod ucts to rnarkei via horse and buggy i could handle horses pretty well she smiled she sold whole chickens at prices ranging from 40 to 50 cents apples were sold by the barrel from their orchards for recreational pastimes mrs rye attended a number of tall fairs in the district took part in numerous apple paring bees and spent a good deal of her free time involved with church work although born in canada mrs ryes parents were origin ally from england she explained how they sail ed to canada and the trip last ed seven weeks mrs rye related how when the wind blew in the right dir ection everyone on the ship would celebrate came to stoufiville following the death of her husband in 1939 mrs rye came to live with her daugh- small ters she has spent some time with each of them and is pres ently living with mrs russell j smith on park drive north her son john w rye has kept the mount albert farms operational mr ryes two other daugh ters are mrs guy rutledge blanche of siouttville and mrs george allison edna of uxbridge she has seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren long life in her family is a common trail her husband liv ed to be 86 years old and she has a sister still living in scar borough her sister mrs ar chie smith grace is 91 years old i lived a good christian life she said and had a con tented home i have no regrets mrs rye continued i had to work hard when i was young but i enjoyed it life was good and it was healthy although not one to travel extensively mrs rye has been to the united states and into northern ontario i was happy at home and never was much for travelling space age mrs rye said that the biggest change she has seen has been with mans efforts to conquer pace she watched the last space flight on television and discussed its possibilities with other members of the family she also watches the news casts and keeps informed on canadian politics she voted at the last federal election mrs rye was particularly thrilled when a special ear phone was connected with the television enabling her to hear everything as clear as a bell this gadget lets me hear things better now that i did 40 years ago unable to attend sunday ser vices she listens to sermons produced on the radio her parents at dinner at manchester last sunday also present were mr and mrs j a fleming un- ionville and mr barrie gibbon and mr rov walters new doctor stouffville united church board has accepted the resigna tions of choir leader mr lome boadway and organist mrs chas nolan mr boadway has conducted this local choir for some twelve year and mrs no lan has presided at the organ for twentythree years the board is presently advertising for a replacement to fill both positions lr gin a graham of toronto will be joining the staff of irs mhcliell and smith on july kt he is a recent graduate of the uni
