tttt 10 the stouffviuf t8iwjm ttwrwky w 21 j95 in this corner by box wallace maybe its too early to tell but from what weve seen the bau clubs are not making as big a hit with the spectators as first anticipated looking around the field at any given game one might observe about 50 viewers taking a halfhearted interest in the proceedings in the grandstand people come and go depending on how the game is turning out it may be half full at the start of a ball game but by the fifth or sixth inning looks as though tomeone had pressed the air raid siren baseball in stouffville is not professional but its good ball and well worth watching its true there hasnt been an intermediate club here for some years but its here now and the fellows who are trving to keep it going deserve the fan support they are not a winning club yet however championship base- ball is not something that happens overnight practice and perseverence something this club has plenty of will eventually produce a tiptop team the excuse of not wanting to waste time with a losing club doesnt hold water where the juniors are concerned this club judging from their opening games will go all the way this leason and vet theyre doing it without the hometown support true there are the loyal supporters who see every game but its the same faces week after week this is directed at those who spend sunday afternoons and wednesday evenings in front of the television set it cant be the price that is keeping people away after all silver collection only ranges from a dime to a dollar and there is no obligation on anyones part the lads that play on our teams are local boys many who have lived here for years and years they make up part of our community they are promoting one of the few summer sports stouffville has they cant do it by themselves perhaps when the girls start their schedule the crowds will swell nevertheless baseball is baseball be it boys or girls and baseball needs spectators in stouffville it needs them badly being fair we must admit that baseball is not the most exciting sport in canada chess is more thrilling than some games weve seen but just the thought of the home town team competing against other centres should bring spectators out by the droves bau can be dull and tiring yet in the same breath it is interest ing competitive and challenging it requires of the players sharp reflexes good control and undivided attentiveness and players have a tendency to show off if they know theres a good crowd supporting them theyll do their best to please everyone and theyll give them something worth coming back to see again they wont always win but theyll be in there trying support baseball in stouffville it boosts the community pirit junior girls exert allout effort in high jump competition was keen at the stoultville public school track and field meet last week and three new records were established jennie banjray of orchard park the jr cilrls champion is shown here clearing the high jump bar she rolled up a total of 27 points staff photo sharon barry of summilvlew was the runnerup for the jr girls title with 1 points but she captured a red rihlion in the high jump class her school collected a total of 4fil points as compared to 401 for orchard park staff photo still on the subject of baseball we received a rather un usual note from the markham aces the club sent a message regarding the officiating of a recent game and they praised the umpires the note said in part adding to the colour of this fine ball game we must give three cheers to the finest officiating we have seen this year loring dolittle at the plate and ross de- geer on the bases added the little extra that comes from ex perience that must be had in a ball game of this kind the umpires who in the eyes of most fans don t know what they are doing deserve a lot of credit for the efforts they put into a ball game umpireinchief for the area is gabby lapointe from new market he is to be commended ior the excellent umpires that have appeared in different communities these men do their jobs as they see it and its always nice to hear favourable comments about their work instead of that traditional kill the ump jazz just standing behind the plate calling balls and strikes hows that these men are capable of making a decision and standing behind it gabby has done his fair share of the games in stouff- villa and his presence alone makes the game worth seeing no one can call a strike like he can and fans will verify that his iamoui streeeek is colouring the game as well as boosting it who are the california curies if you want to find out circle july 6th on your calendar then on that date at 815 pm be at morgan park in markham this event will be something that every member of the ontario ted zuzuki always noted for his speed on the base paths showed plenty of power at the plate on wednesday and whacked out a pair of hits scored one run and romped home with two others his performance was not enough however as stouffville iga bowed to port hope 54 in a real tight contest don haynes always noted for his catching ability turned pitcher on wednesday and fired a creditable 7hitter he actu ally had a victory in the bag but an infield error and a lost ball in the lights set the stage for a port hope rally in the 6th four runs came in and the vis itors lead was too great to overcome it pool sharks the first warm weekend since the pool opened brought swimmers out by the hundreds some 1100 persons paid admission into the pool last saturday and sunday and with temperatures stretching into the high 80s why not however it cant be hot like that all the time and this year that difficulty has been overcome the pool is heated manager andrew williams expressed his delight at the number of persons who have visited the pool during the early part of belownormal june normal temperature for the water is 72 degrees regardless of whether the thermometer says 50 or 80 the pool is heated with natural gas and the temperature can be regulated very easily besides the heated pool mr williams has come up with another idea to keep poolgoers amused its called water jousting and its as easy as falling off a log two plywood plalforms four feet square have been secur ed to four foot diameter tractor tubes both platforms will be fastened together with a measure of rope to prevent them from drifting apart the competitors one on each platform will be armed with broom handles bare at one end and a plunger grac ing the other the plunger will be covered with cloth to prevent any injury from then on its every man for himself the victor of course is the one who remains upright on his raft while his cohort is fished out of the water were wondering if the prize might be maid marion aces win on aurora errors bob ellis paced the markham aces to an easy 51 victory ag ainst aurora glenville dairy on tuesday night as he strung goose eggs on the score sheet for eight consecutive innings elliss fine pitching efforts held aurora at bay until the 9th inning when glenville scored their only run the lefthander gave up four hits walked two and struck out 10 aurora grabbing the ball before it hit the ground hitting for markham were jim johnson rick conlin ber- nie mcgriskin and mike hug- gins aurora marksmen were keith browning keith scott charlie leeming and glen ben- net now that high school has closed its doors for another term the pools regular staff is now on duty besides the regular day time swimming the pool is open to the adults in the evening and wimming classes begin around the first of july the swimming classes that will be conducted by trained experts are an absolute must for the nonswimmer we endorse them wholeheartedly in canada swimming should come as naturally as eating and with the countless thousands of lakes and streams not know ing how to swim is dangerous added to the swimming lessons the student will also learn ilfesaving techniques all ton many people have drowned simply because a group of onlookers stood around saying i dont know how to do it the methods are easy to learn easy to apply and good to know this is not a commercial but we strongly recommend that the nonswimmer join these classes learn how to swim and rest assured that he knows how to help in case of an emergency the life you save could be your own stouffville can be proud of its pool its rapable life guards and its qualified instructors we hope the citizens will take ad vantage of them you cant please all the people all the time as we found out in a recent visit to pool side with the sun beaming down the air warm and the water heated we overheard one lad comment gee id love to go in but ill get wet and as a closing note yours truly is still afraid of the high diving board if anyone has any suggestions on how to overcome these fears id sure like to hear era claremonf scores 90 shutouf the offensive and defensive methods of the claremont
